Welcome to the First Time Mothers (FTM) check-in!

This is a thread for the FTM's in our PAIF community. Check-ins will be posted every other Thursday. On alternating Thursdays, I'll post a FT & BTDT moms' "Play Date" thread - in which we inexperienced first timers ask for advice and feedback from the more experienced ladies in our communities.

If you're new to the group, please provide your EDD and advise your trimester (I'd do it myself, but you know, math) - Let us know too if you're carrying more than one little bean/grapefruit/bowling ball (depending on how far you are along).

Hello, ladies.

By now, most of you have heard about CarSaidYes's unexpected, and devastating loss. It's a reminder of how delicate life can be - especially in these early months and years. She had a lot of enthusiasm in her posts and took joy in everything from naming to gender reveals. She will be missed around here. =((

And just as life throws tough punches, it also brings amazing excitement. I am hoping to hear some really good news from @SouthernYankeeGirl very soon. Maybe she's off the boards today because she's busy with her mom visiting - or maybe she's in labor *right*now*as*we*speak! We'll just have to wait for her update to see. ;;)

AFM: I passed a big milestone, hitting 24w and the age of viability yesterday. I got a dose of steroids yesterday & today, so hopefully, right now both boy & girl are busy working on building up lung tissue.

My leak seems to come and go (but its never gone for more than a day at a time now

What's up with that?) I had an u/s this morning, and Baby A's fluid is still low - but there is still fluid there. I can feel him moving from time to time, so at least he can move somewhat. My MFM did point out how he doesn't have very much extra space for the cord, like his sister does. So, my new anxiety is about whether his cord is going to get crushed.

I was also reminded that DH and I should give some thought to what we would decide in a scenario where A was in trouble, where forcing labor/c-section might mitigate risks for Baby A, but put Baby B at higher risk than if she could have stayed put. (And, staying put is almost always better).

Well, thank you for the Sophie's Choice. DH and I have talked about this, and the only conclusion we can come to is that we won't know until we get there, and we know the full specific scenario, and had an idea of the risks involved.

Sorry to bring everyone down. Kittens! (There, did that help?)

QOTW: I didn't get to do much shopping before the big leaking incident, but we did pick out bedding. I was so frustrated to see that the bedding is almost as tied to gender roles as the clothing. (And the clothing, I get on some level - because you can't tell the gender of a baby who's not naked, so parents want to let you know what you're seeing). At least there is some logic there. But why the sea of pink bed sheets?

Fortunately, there are other options, and the sheets on the "boy side" of the wall could be more easily interpreted as gender neutral. We decided not to go with an animal theme (which limited our options). I wanted two distinct sets that complemented each other, so we went with a mildly nautical theme. No way to sexualize the ocean right? I later realized the sheet sets have names - Zachary and Willaim. SMH, Nautica. You almost ruined it. Luckily, the cute little octopus doll saved it.

Anatomy scan on the 14th and really just counting down until then and praying the babies are healthy. My aunts started planning my shower at the end of February, but not much else going on. I think I did too much in NYC this past weekend, as I am still really tired, but looking forward to a relaxing weekend.

QOTW- I haven't really done much shopping yet, but did notice a lot of stuff is very gender specific. Like @AMShark‌ we are not doing an animal or really much of any theme in the nursery. Will have a color scheme and maybe so cutesy crib sheets that match.

A/S on Monday was great and we cannot wait to find out this weekend! 3 more days!!

QOTW: due to IF brain I really didn't want to buy anything for another month or two but trying to trust all will continue to be okay so I did try out and order a Best glider/recliner that I'm very excited about! I'm leaning toward a vintage nursery look regardless of gender and nothing too themey or gender specific. Thinking of light turquoise/aqua on the walls (surprise surprise!).

Thanks for the check in! I am glad to hear your little ones are still moving around and Baby A is hanging onto some fluid (just keep rooting for him to pee all the time!). You are in such a hard situation and you're handling it really gracefully. Just know we're all thinking of you.

As for me, I'm doing a-ok! We have our "birthday planning meeting" with our midwife team tonight and I'm excited/freaked out about how close the end seems now.

QOTW: We're all on the same page with our peeves, it seems! since we're team green (and I'm really, really not a fan of cutesy "daddy's little princess" or "future quarterback" clothes anyway) it's been tough buying some things. We started with a vaguely star/constellation theme which thankfully is gender neutral but then got sidetracked and just bought things we liked. Now I'm annoyed because people keep asking my theme and I feel like I failed by not having one. Oh well.

Hello ladies!

@AMShark‌ thank you for posting this thread as always. I hope you aren't forced to make any hard decisions. You are doing awesome!

AFM, 34w2d and it's hard to believe the end is coming quickly! I plan to purchase wrist splints this weekend to help with my hands faking asleep at night. Not much else I can do per my OB.

Tomorrow we have our fetal echo to see if the variant found on baby's heart is anything to be concerned about at birth. My OB said she isn't worried. In spite of this, I well up with tears when I think about it. I need to pull myself together.

QOTW: I found the whole car seat and stroller situation to be obnoxious. I had the hardest time picking out a car seat and I wound up changing my mind in the store. We had to order the adapter from the manufacturers website for the stroller. And why don't these strollers come with the stupid snack trays?? Not one accessory is included. And while I know baby won't be using a snack tray anytime soon, it's just one more thing I have to purchase online or go back to the store for bc they were out of stock. It's stupid.

Thanks for the check-in @AMShark! Thinking about you and those babies often.

I'm still shocked I'm at 20 weeks. I think my OB was too. Her eyes got huge, she looked at me, "OH MY GOSH!" Me, timid, "Yes?" "You're at 20 weeks! You're halfway there! I don't believe it!" Haha.. I love her.

So I have that anterior placenta.. but I think I've been feeling some little nudges or something. They are very infrequent, but just in the past 3 days I've been getting these same little movements. I'm wondering if I'm starting to feel him?!

QOTW: I guess I'm just amazed with how much stuff there is, and how much I don't know. How do I know what kind of certain items to get? How do I know what items I'll need and what isn't needed. It's overwhelming.

@AMShark - I've been wondering what the options are for Baby A if Baby B ends up in serious distress, but I didn't want to ask because the whole proposition is so horrendous to consider. I think you're wise to just postpone that decision! On a similar note I read something recently that said the moms should talk with their partners about their preference if it ever came to a question of saving mom versus saving baby during birth, just in case the mom couldn't contribute to the conversation. Yikes!!

@ky29 - Highly recommend Lucie's List and Baby Bargains to help sort through all the options. It really is overwhelming!!

Who ARE the people who like all the super gendered crap???? I don't get it. My pet peeve is just that things are hard to get and find. We're doing a forest/nature theme, and there's lots of stuff out there but it always seems to be out of stock. The other pet peeve is that so much seems to be EITHER super cheap garbage or preposterously expensive. We wanted, for example, a cute little rug along the forest floor theme. This one from Ikea is cute enough, but definitely not high quality:

We LOVE this one, but it's a cool $6400, which..LOL:

You'd think there would be a middle ground somewhere between $30 and $6400, but we couldn't find a single comparable thing. We bought the Ikea one.

That's my gripe!

Hello!

@AMShark That is an awful decision to make! Sounds like a good plan to wait and see what the circumstances are before deciding, but hopefully it never comes to that.

I'm doing well - counting down to 24 weeks on Monday. I'm starting to notice more movement from the outside and sometimes can even see the movement. I had a lot of cramping earlier in the week, but I think it was my own fault for helping DH with painting last weekend. Our painter cancelled last minute, and I felt bad making DH do everything himself. So I took care of all the taping and moving light items out of the rooms. Stayed up until 2am one night re-doing the guestroom now that we combined it with the office. Word of advice - don't do what I did!

We were trying to get things done with the rooms last weekend, because our crib and glider are being delivered this weekend and my shower is next weekend - holy crap!

QOTW: My pet peeve isn't around the shopping...but just how some people are nazi's about what you can and cannot do when pregnant. Even OBs can't agree on things, so let me be!

Things are just chugging along here. We go back for a re-scan in a couple of weeks because they couldn't see his pulmonary valve at the anatomy scan. They said it was probably just a case of being too small to see at that point, because the rest of the heart looked great.

QOTW: I'm with pblge on the middle ground nursery items. I'm okay paying a little bit of money...but $400+ for a rug? Blah.

@pblge - I hadn't even thought of that decision, but its a good point. I guess all of us should have that conversation before childbirth. BTW - I like both rugs, and while the 2nd one is absolutely gorgeous, it looks like a royal pain in the arse to vacuum - and since it will probably get hit by its fair share of spit up, I think the Ikea rug was a wise choice. Maybe you'll eventually stumble upon an appropriate middle grad rug, right around the time the cheap one needs to be replaced.

I am still here and getting sick of being in labor. Going on day 3 now of regular contractions, most of which are painful or at least majorly uncomfortable. It's odd - the painful ones are my favorite as I feel like they're doing something and we might be finally getting somewhere. Call me a masochist! However, it's exhausting, both physically and emotionally. If I make it to my 40w appointment on Monday AM without having this pick up, I will be asking them to give me pitocin to get things moving. I have now been having sporadic painful contractions for 3+ weeks and regular contractions for 3 days. So ready to not be pregnant!

My Mom had almost an identical labor with me, and once she got some pitocin things moved quickly and easily, so I am hopeful that will be the case for me if need be. I feel bad about wanting to induce before 41 weeks or whatever, but a girl could go insane from being in labor indefinitely.

QOTW: I did nautical and had navy and white and gray as colors and wanted a pop of something bright, but all nautical things I could find had red. Red, white, and blue was far too patriotic for my taste. I finally found a bedroom set with pops of teal/aqua that I loved, but struggled to find coordinating shades of aqua/teal! I am now an expert at the perfect balance of blue and green, and the nursery looks awesome.

12w2d and doing well. NT scan yesterday went well and it was great to see the babies - they finally look human! The bad news on here really got me down, as well as a friend/coworker who's currently waiting on her induction to work (or not work) at 36 weeks due to high BP. It all makes me feel like I'm in this happy naieve little bubble and afraid something bad will change that. The good news post and the check-ins have helped, though. No pet peeves here, yet. We haven't bought a single thing for the babies yet. DH is really wanting to "nest" and I'm the total opposite! I've been making efforts to humor him and I think it's finally rubbing off on me. Still no purchases (we did try to buy a dresser to refurbish into a changing table/dresser on CL, but the seller flaked...jerk) but I started cleaning my sewing stuff out of what will become the babies' room. I didn't get very far, but it was a start! Then I discovered Lucie's List and got overwhelmed...back to anti-nesting mode!

I'm 18 weeks today. I've been feeling little movements from the twins and it is an interesting feeling. The little girl seems to be more active than the boy. My A/S is January 13th and I can't wait to see my little ones again. I'm also hoping that my placenta previa has resolved itself. Baby girl's placenta was completely covering my cervix at my last ultrasound and it makes me really nervous.

10 weeks over here & I'm starting to reconnect with the pregnancy. After the loss of one twin, I felt so scared that we'd lose them both so I disconnected. Self preservation, I'm thinking. I guess it's just easier to grieve - I feel like a pro at that! But our last scan was very reassuring and our RE said that, "we can breathe easy & I think you're in for a 9 month adventure." We graduate on Monday

Can I join? I'm 7w3d (1st tri @AMShark‌ ), EDD 8/26, and am expecting 2 peanuts. First OB appt is 1/14, and I can't wait to see the heartbeats again!

QOTW- I haven't gotten far enough to start looking for nursery items yet. We're going to have to move before the babies arrive, so it's not even a blip on our radar yet. I'm thinking colors vs any themes. Depending on if we do 1 nursery or 2 to start, our wedding colors were navy and hot pink, so could do that for 1. Or gray/turquoise and gray/pink. I'm a simple girl.

Hey ladies! I'd like to join. We are in the first trimester with one little peanut due 8/6/15.

QOTW: Since, we are still in the first trimester I wasn't planning on shopping yet. I have been spending a ridiculous amount of time online looking at things. While online browsing, I discovered Babies R Us is having a sweepstakes but you have to register before Jan 27th. We decided to go ahead and start a registry with gender neutral items. I found for most items we actually preferred the gender neutral items. I also broke my no buying til 2nd tri rule, because we found a travel system on clearance (normally $379 marked down to $124). My biggest frustration is that I've been anxious to get started, but didn't really want to buy anything d/t being early and IF brain lingering.

Hey all. My miracle baby is now 10 weeks old! Absolutely crazy to think about. His baptism is coming up. I think that will be hard pn me with the loss of his twin but hopefully i can pull through with the emotions. Little man is smiling away and following objects. We are still waiting for the big milestones like holding his head up and turning towards noises. With him being 5 weeks early we are supposed to base his milestones off of his due date. It is so hard to remember that he is developmentally only 5 weeks old right now. OH YEAH! And he's sleeping through the night! How can I forget that one!

AMShark Laying on your left side is supposed to help with the development of the babies. When my water broke with one of my babies at 29 weeks they told me that after a certain point the babies can live and develop without the amniotic fluid. Good Luck to you! I did the 3 weeks on bed rest and it was horrible but now I have my beautiful baby

@hbanana18 - Good luck with your A/S too! I'm also not a fan of stereotypical gender colors, but it's even less appealing to me as we want to put a boy and a girl in the same room.

@turquoisequeen - Congrats on your good A/S! A turquoise nursery - I think we're all shocked.

@runawaylaurel - Hope you had a good birth planning meeting with your mw. Constellations sound cute and educational - but where does it say that nurseries need a "theme" anyway? Don't sweat it, and continue to buy what you want - That's what I say.

@weansworld09 - I hope all went well with your fetal echo - update us, if you can.

@1220winterbride - I've never thought it was fair to call anyone incompetent - even if they are just a cervix. Hoping yours stays strong enough & keeps LO safe.

@ky29 - Hooray for halfway! I'll bet you *have* been feeling movements. That's exactly when I first felt anything.

@pblge - I think I already said, but I think both rug choices are cute - and there's something to be said for cheap rugs in a room that will see its share of baby bodily fluids.

@gsancho - Sorry to hear about the cramping - hopefully, it was just from overdoing it while painting. Hope your shower is lots of fun.

@Aimothy - I hope you were able to get the additional measurements at your re-scan. Think of it as a bonus look at LO.

@Southernyankeegirl - Skipping ahead to your new post - CONGRATULATIONS on baby Ryan!

@chicory - Congrats on a good NT scan. Don't feel too behind. DH & I didn't do any shopping until after our A/S at 19 weeks.

@PurpleDaisy923 - FX your placenta moves. My girl is more active than my boy too - I wonder it that's typical?

@RunCC37 - I'm glad to hear you're gaining a little confidence for your "9 month adventure" - You've been through so much - It's easy to understand if self preservation mode takes over at times.

@katemonster1 - Thanks for the heads-up. I made some adjustments to the Trimester lists (honestly, I'm thankful when someone does the counting for me). I love your 12 yo buing maxi pads analogy - that's spot on.

@ekc0630 - Thanks for checking in! Your little man is absolutely adorable. I try to lay on my left side as much as possible. I made it through 3 weeks of modified bed rest at home, but only 1 week in on hospital bed rest - but still going strong (most of the time). I appreciate the words of encouragement.

Big congratulations to all our new 'grads'! I feel like there is a wave of new babies all of a sudden this week!

@AMShark - Definitely a tough decision to make, but as you said, I think it is impossible to know until you are in a specific situation. Sending you T&Ps that you never have to face that!

@pbige - I actually have told my husband several times (and continue to tell him) that if god forbid anything were to ever happen/go awry - focus on the baby - not on me. He doesn't like to hear that and doesn't deal well with such dire topics but I just keep telling him every few weeks because that is how I feel. We worked so hard to have this baby - and while I am sure everything will be fine, I just need him to know how I feel worst case scenario.

AFM: 38 weeks!!! YIKES! I have no sense on when this little person will arrive. I have my 38 week appt tomorrow and my first real cervical check - so while I am dreading it since I will likely bleed a lot after, it will be good to get a sense of where things are. As uncomfortable as I am, I still hope to go to 40 weeks. To my knowledge I have only once or twice had BH - at least that I have felt. Baby is still very active - so that is good - other than the fact that his/her movements hurt a LOT more now.

QOTW: In terms of the nursery - no real pet peeves. We are team Green so it is neutral - walls are iced mint with one accent wall in creamy beige. Crib is white, dresser is light grey, toy storage box is walnut wood with orange doors/bins, glider is orange, and rug is the sky with colorful hot air balloons. And we just put up ABC wall decals today. The one BIG pet peeve I have is baby clothing - EVERYTHING is so genderized! Finding cute take home outfits that don't scream boy/girl has been tough. I found a cute white with grey outfit and then bought a cute white one last week. I don't want to spend $$ on an outfit that is pink/blue since I need to wash it and then can't return, so I ended up getting a pink and blue hat to go with the white outfit (bought 2 outfits since my sister suggested having 1 in NB and 1 in 0-3 mos just in case the baby is bigger - as she said - trying to fit the baby into an outfit that is too small may not be a good bonding experience!)

I wish there were some more cute outfits in color - greens, yellows, red & blue - without being gender specific.

@Lady2010 - You are so in the home stretch. You'd think with so many expectant mothers frustrated by the gender specific choices, there'd be more options available. On the upside, babies don't care what color hat they are wearing, as long as their heads are warm.

Well, as usually later in the posting. Congrats to the new grads, mega hugs for the newest angel Mom and hang in there to those who are having struggles.

I'm at 21w and JP had his scan last week. Finally got a tech that didn't do the whole thing in silence. This was great for SO who hadn't seen the baby since blob mode. He looks awesome (and big)! Starting to feel bumps here and there that I know aren't an organ freaking out about being shifted. Still not looking pregnant but ehh can't do much about that until he moves above the belly button. Finally learned that my placenta is in the back and the baby likes to lay on his back, no matter what position I'm in he shifts on to his back no matter what way I shift. I hope he isn't a snorer like his Dad.

QOTW: My peeve is that everything is geared size wise to devoting a 10x15 room to the LO. We don't even have a 10x15 room! All of the covertable cribs, save one, become a full sized bed. Dressers as big as mine for tiny tiny clothes. Who knew something so small needs that much space!

@weansworld09‌ - GL with the echo! Hopefully it's nothing to be concerned about!

@pblge‌ - totally 2nd that the Ikea rug is the way to go! Besides price, that other one looks like a pita to deal with!

@Aimothy‌ - we had to go back 2x after the initial a/s to check on her heart. We just took it as extra chances to see her. GL at the next scan and enjoy it! Could be your last before the growth u/s!

@RunCC37‌ - we lost a twin too and I think only recently I've started to connect and believe this may actually happen. Between IF & that initial loss, it really screws with your head! Hopefully the rest of the pg will be nice and uneventful!

@Lady2010‌ - we are so close to the end now! Eek! Btw, do u feel like lo's movement's are much different from before? I know that the babies get bigger the further along you are but she feels almost like a rock sliding across belly. Do u get similar feelings?

AFM: Outside of l&d runs, we're doing well. Still not effaced or dilated, since my last appt. Have another one on thursday so FX I start dilating or something! I have been having contractions so I guess that's something.

QOTW: my biggest pet peeve right now is that the bedding set I got (that is so so cute) didn't include any curtains and it's been SO difficult to find anything that matches! I got the set because 1. hopeby2015 - FX on Thursday! They actually didn't do a cervical check today - which was fine by me. I have a sensitive cervix and have bled a lot in the past so they said since I haven't dropped and everything is on track - no need for one. They will start at 39 weeks (next week).

Baby is still moving a lot - which is good - except when it hurts or when I am sleeping! He/she still gives lots of good kicks/punches but there is definitely the rock slither move - when shifting his/her bum, etc - you can see the entire belly move (and not always comfortable)

@Regan1976 - Congrats on the good scan. I am with you on the too large furniture. Until I started shopping, I had no idea that cribs convert into full sized beds. I slept in a twin until I was married at age 27! I guess the assumption is that everyone lives in new construction, with great, big bedrooms.

@hopeby2015 - I think I just posted about this on another thread - When I was a kid, my mom used to buy an extra set of flat sheets,and then hem them to make curtains. She claims its cheaper, and an easy way to match your sheets. Maybe you can try that.

@sunshinedaisies000 - I was so sorry to read about your fur baby. ((hugs)) I have a fear that something will happen to one of my cats while I'm in the hospital for weeks on end. I can imagine your grief.

I don't think you need all that! Multiple sources say to use the PnP as the bassinet, as you'll get more use out of it. Also, I've read babies seem to have an innate preference for EITHER the RnP, a swing or a bouncer. If you have the ability, waiting until after your LO is born to see what he likes makes the most sense. Could also just get one that you think will fit your household's rhythms best (e.g., maybe a small bouncer if you have small rooms). We got one of the strollers that our car seat can lock into, as that does seem important, but are holding off on everything else, and will likely just try to get a jogging stroller used from CL from some mom who thought it would get her to jog with the baby and it didn't.

I'm finalizing the registry right now, so I'm ALL ABOUT this!!! Of course, none of this will help if the problem is that your MIL wants to buy you all the baby stuff.

Btw, for those reading about cribs, we spent a lot of time looking at the "nontoxic" baby sites, as we are concerned about formaldehyde, phthalates, etc. Basically all those cribs are $1000, which is just preposterous. BUT!!! There's one other crib that is always mentioned as nontoxic, totally safe, got great ratings from Baby Bargains, and is far, far less money: the Sniglar crib from Ikea, at a mere $70. It probably won't last through multiple kids, but who cares? Buy another one for the second! It comes unfinished, which is why it's so nontoxic, but you could easily paint it any shade of grey you want. It was also good for us, as we needed the crib to be short bc of the room shape. Consumer Reports didn't rate it, but gave excellent ratings to another Ikea crib, for what that's worth.

I don't know how I missed this check in! I hope all you ladies are doing well and LOs are doing great! @RunCC37‌ your Drs words about being in for 9 months gave me goosebumps! And even though I didn't lose a twin I feel exactly the same way due to my prior losses, it's so hard to trust but I'm getting there. I'm 12 weeks today. I ordered a home Doppler but haven't really used it bc I was too nervous, but today my back has just hurt so I broke down and used it. I think LO is finally moving from out behind my pubic bone because I found the heart beat right away, phewwwww my next appointment isn't until my birthday on the 26th. No shopping for me yet but a pottery barn baby catalog came in the mail today (I guess they are psychic!) and it has so much cute stuff.

Thank you ladies for your support!

We had a great echo and I couldn't be happier! The Dr said there is some "stretchiness" on one structure of the heart, but that he sees it all the time and his concern was low, "as in zero"

DH and I were ecstatic! The cardiologist also said the baby/child may have an extra heartbeat that the pedi may pick up on, but it's nothing to be concerned about and the baby will likely grow out of it without any issue.

Big hugs to all of you ladies! Not sure what I would do without this outlet.
