The fruit you actually push out

So, me and DH were comparing baby's head to various fruits. It is pretty darn close to a nice-sized grapefruit.
Pushing out a watermelon sounds pretty scary, pushing out a grapefruit (or stack of grapefruits :P) sounds much better!

Re: The fruit you actually push out

  • A grapefruit? I would think it would be like a small cantaloupe. I think a grapefruit would be too small.

  • I think grapefruit is right - 10cm diameter is about that...

  • Definitely depends on the grapefruit! I've seen some as small as a medium orange or large as a small cantelope. But yeah watermelon is ridiculous!

  • My kids head is in the 5th percentile. Shoulders were worse for me.

  • I bought a bag of grapefruits from costco. They were pretty large grapefruit. My son's head is probably a similar size. His was 14 inches. No one would be able to push out an actually watermelon, could you imagine!? haha
  • I am on board with cantaloupe. He's got a big melon head.

  • It hurts even with an epidural.
DS had/has a crazy big head. I remember pushing really hard, and nothing was progressing. This LO has a "normal" head. I still felt the 'ring of fire', but it was nothing like before. Definitely more of a large navel orange as opposed to a grapefruit.
  • Ok, I just ate a grapefruit about 15 minutes ago. LOL. I would compare DS to the size of a cantaloupe when he was born.

  • I am currently a watermelon, and next week is Jackfruit. Either one of those would be terrifying.
  • Someone should make a baby out of fruit and post a picture..I'm thinking a grapefruit for the head and then maybe a small cucumber underneath that to represent the shoulders....

  • My first baby had a head circumference that put him at 97th percentile. So yah. I tore. And the head was for SURE the worst. Everything else sort of slides out after that!!

My baby's head has been measuring over 99th percentile consistently. I have been dreading this. More the recovery than anything. What degree was your tear?

I think it was 2nd degree, but I'm not sure. It was 7 years ago. I've had two more, both with 1st and 2nd degree tearing. Recovery was "ok". Not super bad...
  • Still waiting to have #3. But with my second (a VBAC) after he came out my midwife said "now you need to deliver the placenta" and I must have given her a look of terror because the next thing she said was "don't worry, there are no bones". Hopefully this ones head isn't too big!

This exactly for my first. He was also in a really weird position and quite stuck for quite a while.

With my second that I just had, her head was smaller, so her shoulders did actually take a second, which caught me by surprise. With my son, once his head was out, the rest of him just came right out.

Thanks! That makes me feel a little better. I think I could handle 2nd degree... Hopefully. Haha
