So..every baby is different (or so I hear) and different bottles work better with different babies..right?! I plan to breastfeed..but plans can change. I'm just wondering how do/did you make your initial bottle purchases? Put 3 different kinds on your registry and just hope 1 of them works for your child?

I see good reviews of Tommie Tippee but had 2 mom's I know say baby hated them..or certain brand cause more gas. I feel like I need to find a bottle education site! Lol

Re: which Bottles??!

  • We chose a bottle recommended by our LC because I was hoping to both BF and bottle feed pumped milk. She recommended the Playtex Nurser with drop-ins. We tried several types of bottles because I stupidly thought we needed something fancier. Lol. Dr Browns (wide neck plastic and also the glass bottles), Medela Calma, Comotomo and the Avent Natural Bottle. Ultimately, our baby took the cheap Playtex nurser with drop-ins the best. We happened to love that bottle because of the ease of disposable liners which made warming up baby's bottle so easy. Hoping our second baby will like that bottle, too, but we are prepared to try a few and see what works best.

  • I second the playtex drop ins. We tried half a dozen others (Avent, Dr. Brown, Medela just to name a few) before I caved and went for the "cheap" playtex bottles. I had a few on my registry but never got any, so when we were ready to try bottle feeding I just bought one at a time until we found one that worked. You could put a few different ones on your registry and keep them in their packaging until you're ready to try them.
  • I would third the drop ins but my youngest would only take Tommee Tippee. I'd wait and see what kind of bottles your LO likes before investing in a set. All babies are different.

At daycare Dr Browns & Nuk were pretty popular bottles with the other moms.

  • We got a bunch of the Avent Natural bottles as gifts and LO likes them fine. We also tried Nuk and Mam which we had a couple of and she was fine with them too, so I guess she's just not that picky. I'd say try a cheap bottle first or whatever people give you, and if they don't work try the fancier ones.
  • All of my kids preferred different bottles. For my youngest, we tried a couple different brands but Tommee Tippee worked best for DS.
  • I chose Dr. Brown's because they offer glass and I don't think it's good to constantly be heating and drinking out of plastic. My babies never spit up with them.
I chose Dr. Brown's as well for the same reasons above. DS had no issues with that bottle and I breastfed as well. It was really trial and error, I don't believe I put them on a registry.

  • I only registered for Avent bottles with DD (this was 10 years ago) and I regretted it! They made a mess and she hated them. We wound up with Playtex drop-ins.

With DS I didn't buy any bottles initially. And then when we had nursing issues our LC recommended the Breastflow. Well, he never took to that. Tried Tommee Tippee. Nope. No to Medela, either. We wound up with Playtex Ventaires with the wide nipple.

  • We started with Avent natural flow because that is what LO would latch to. We have the twist set but she would not latch to that nipple. LO however is very gassy so we switched to Dr. Browns. If it wasn't for the colic I would if stuck with Avent since the dr. Browns are a pain to clean.
  • You basically just have to get lucky. The nipples make a bigger difference IMO.

Just make sure to get some decent bottles. Vented ones (to reduce colic)
  • I EBF for the first 4 weeks and slowly introduced a bottle. I use the Kiinde system and my daughter took to it very easily. The beauty is that you can use adapters for different brand nipples!
  • We used the Dr Browns glass bottles. My nanny kids used the Tommee Tippee and I hated them. They could never latch on them correctly so milk was always pouring out of the corner of their mouthes, and they never fit in cup holders (both in the car and in the diaper bag).

  • I tried avent natural, comotomo, and tommy tippee for my little one who is ebf until she finally took the playtex drop ins! The incline is wonderful for paced bottle feeding and caused less gas. We chose the natural latch nipples. I regret spending $90 on comotomo bottle sets when there was a shortage because they had rave reviews for a breastfed baby accepting them and ease of cleaning. These were the hardest for her. I also liked the medical grade silicone and the aesthetics. Oh well! The playtex are super convenient and I like them just fine!
