Allergies: Mucus Increase

edited January 2015 in 2nd Trimester
I'm 22 weeks & 6 days pregnant & my allergies are all over the place! I'm constantly sneezing everyday, which means peeing on my self multiple times a day but also I'm having a increase in mucus, more than usual. When I can't exactly make it come up to spit it out, I have no other choice but to swallow it. I know that's gross, but the only thing I am concerned about is; by me not spitting the mucus out.. Is my baby in my stomach swallowing it as well? And if so, will it make her sick?? Someone please let me know... I go to my ob/gyn next week & I know I will ask her but in the meantime, does anyone know?

  • Your baby isn't in your stomach, so no. I have severe allergies and apart from the midwife saying to not take my usual medication and giving me an alternative, they aren't concerned.

I would ask your midwife for some antihistamines and try and avoid triggers :)

    Omg.....smh.

    NO.

  • As far as your baby swallowing your phlegm .. no they get their nutrition from the food you've ingested but through a whole process of the food being broken down and the nutrients and vitamins absorbed (I am no nutritionist and know how the whole process works exactly) but I can confidently say nothing you eat can be directly eaten by your baby. and for the extra mucus all I can say is try buying more tissues so you can have them easily accessible and pee as much as possible as to not pee your self you can also look into using panty liners..

  • A simple solution to help reduce mucus build up in your nasal cavities is to use a nasal spray such as hydrasense to help reduce inflammation and build up. There are many over the counter antihistamines you can use to reduce side effects from allergies. Here in Ontario we have a telehealth line directly for pregnant women called MOTHERRISK which is great to call for questions like this and which drugs are safe/unsafe during pregnancy. With  luck, your area has something similar

  • Did anyone else get an inbox message from OP being called rude, or was it just me.
