August 2015 Moms

What are you reading?

I'm searching for a new book.  Some of my favorites are Wuthering Heights, Life of Pi, My Sister's Keeper, and I know This Much is True.

So what are you reading or what's your favorite book?

PS- This is going to be a post and run.  I've got meetings all day.  Boo.

  • I'm currently reading the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I'm reading the Wizard of Oz to my kiddos!

I'm re-reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy- I'm on the Two Towers and really enjoying myself since it has been about 10 years since I read them last.
I am also! I just got myself the hard copy of the trilogy. I couldn't allow myself to buy it as an e-book.
  • @koehn27‌ I love hitchhikers guide! I've read it several times.

I just finished a book by Brandon Sanderson this weekend, Firefight. I've read everything he's written and really think he is my favorite contemporary writer. If you like sci-fi at all give him a shot. It's not crazy out there either, great characters.

Unfortunately my reading until May is all school related now.
  • Currently, Kitchen Confidential. I bounce all over the place in regards to genre or interest.

  • Right now I am in the middle of Robyn Carr's Thunder Point series.

I also love to read Nora Roberts, Lee Child, Jennifer Weiner, and David Baldacci just to name a few.

  • I love "trashy" books like historical romance novels (Lisa Kleypas, Gaelen Foley, Julia Quinn, etc.) when I feel overwhelmed in life with work, child, pregnancy blahs.  Such great escapism.  Outlander is also good....at least for the first couple of books (I got really annoyed around book 4).  Although these are probably more than romance novels.

When I feel the need to stretch my brain muscles, I read a lot of non-fiction (mostly stuff about WW1 and 19th century Europe) and more high brow fiction (recently read "Life After Life" and the Ken Follet trilogy. Both great).

  • I'm trying so hard to start the Outlander series. GoT series was awesome and waiting for the next book is like death. I was on a Stephen King kick last pregnancy and read a BUNCH of his stuff - Duma Key and 11/22/63 were both great. Gone Girl is good, and I highly recommend her other two books, too. I'm with @quietdownfish, though -- I feel better zoning out in front of the boob tube.
  • I'm in the middle of The Goldfinch and am finding it pretty interesting. It's nice and long, so it is a good one to have going in the dead of winter nights!

  • I just started reading the divergent series. I finished shopaholic to the stars and beautiful day.

I just finished reading "sarah's Key" for book club.  Sad, but good.  I am now working my way through Hitchhikers guide again ( 3rd x reading it )because my teenager is reading it and reading a trashy little love book called "mistletoe and mischief"  it a series of christmas love stories, not usually my genre but I got it as a gift for christmas and it is light and amusing.

Recommendation: "Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. It was wonderful.

    ETA: completely forgot a word

I LOVED this -- though I listened to it on Audio Books during my commute. The voice talent was amazing but the story -- so good.
  • I'm currently reading Moby Dick.

    Preg related: Your Best Birth
Non-preg related: Cartwheels in a Sari; Gone Girl
My list changes just about weekly.
  • Anything by Kate Atkinson or Ann Patchett.

  • I am reading Paper Towns by John Green.
  • Deborah harkness witch series was so much fun!

    Anna karenina

The deed of paksennarion (one of the best coming of age and fantasy books)

Otherland - 4 book series by tad Williams is unstoppable excitement

I really liked the new one by Elizabeth Gilbert... Forget the title. Something about plants.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April

I'm on the 5th book in the Outlander series, I love them! Other good books I've read lately are Gone Girl and the Divergent series. A few of my all time favorites are Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson, Tuesdays with Morrie and also The Five People You Meet in Heaven both by Mitch Albom. Pretty much anything by John Grisham as well!

ETA- Oh and the Sookie Stackhouse series. The show True Blood is (rather loosely) based off of these books if you're into that realm. I found the books far better than the show.
  • @quietdownfiish Read Gone Girl next!

I just finished Revival by Stephen King a couple hours ago. It was pretty good, if you don't mind being a little disturbed. I am trying to decide if I want to continue on the King train and finish The Dark Tower Series (I'm on book 5), or start the Outlander series, or finish the Ascension series by SM Reine (on book 5). Decisions, decisions....

  • All baby books! Happiest Baby on the Block, Praying through your Pregnancy, and Waiting in Wonder! All great!
  • @melsner‌ finish the Dark Tower! I like Outlander a good bit, but the end of the Dark Tower was great!
  • I just started Dear Babies: Crazy Life, Simply Explained by Amy Denby and I can not put it down. She really has a way of capturing the "essence" of pregnancy in such a clever, loving and funny way!

  • I finished a flurry of personal development books over the holidays including Eat That Frog, Never Eat Alone, and the most recent being Power Mentoring. Though now my reading material is solely the bump!

  • Firefly lane by Kristin hannah. Tear jerker but amazing. Anything by Jodi picoult, most recently house rules. Dean koontz, the door to December. The giver - a classic. My all time favorite. Don't see the movie it's crap.

Mitch albom is great and so is austen burroughs, running with scissors.
  • I loved I Know This Much is True. The rest of Wally Lamb's books are great, as well. Pat Conroy is also a favorite of mine. I just finished All the Light We Cannot See and am currently making my way through Kent Haruf's books.
  • I just finished under the dome by stephen king. Much better then the tv series
  • Off the book to movie list above, The Duff is a cute, quick read. Also, for those into the Lord of the Rings, check out the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. They are long but a good read. The "I am Number 4" books were a fun young adult series. And slightly trashy, totally sappy love story: ugly love.
  • Just finished reading The Host and now I really want the sequel.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • I just finished The Silkworm and am now reading Amy Poehler's Yes Please :)
  • I love fiction that pulls you and you cant put it down. I've read these two in the past couple weeks.

The Deepest Secret by Carla Buckley. Awesome. Very Jodi Piccult ish. It's about a mom doing whatever it takes to protect her son, who has a deadly disease that causes any exposure to UV light to be fatal. Twisty and superb!

And Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight. Really great! A high school girl supposedly commits suicide, but her mom just doesn't believe it. She and the police retrace her daughter's life until they get to the bottom of what really happened.
