Glucose Tolerance test

I am 28 weeks and my OB ordered a GTT. Has anyone needed to get this test and how was your experience? I have been told it is 3 hours long.

  • Not everyone gets the 3 hour test, but everyone gets a glucose test.
  • Everyone takes some variation of it. It's common and has been covered 79 times, take a look around at other threads to find some helpful information.

  •  All doctors have you do one version of the test. It is either a 1 or 3 hour version.  You drink a glucose solution they give you and it makes your glucose levels rise.  They draw blood in the time frame (1 hour or 3) and see what your body did with the glucose and how it metabolized it.  If they do the 1 hour and your results are fine they don't do another test.  If the results are high or you are close to the cut off for high they make you do the 3 hour test.  If you fail that you usually get sent to a nutritionist and have to start keeping track of your diet and have to make changes to it like no carbs or fruit for many women and possibly daily blood monitoring and insulin.  The test they are having you do is just standard and everyone does one version of it so don't worry about it.
  • More of a Monday Bitchfest theme, but she opened the door.

I don't know of it was the orange shit itself or the part where we've spent the last few years eating pretty paleo, but I was a bit nervous of my body's ability to process the yellow-40 more than all of the -ose's on the list. And day-um that shit was disgusting! Took me over 5 min to just choke it down and burp/puked in my mouth for 3 hrs after. Glorious!

Someone needs to invent a better way to test for that...........

Your doctor or a dietician would NEVER suggest NO CARBS or NO FRUIT. Ever. This isn't for weight loss like an atkin's diet. However, you may be sent to a dietician to learn how to choose the correct carbs: complex, natural, correct portions, correct timing, etc. Please not think that IF you are diagnosed GD that you will not be able to eat a single carb or piece of fruit for your entire remaining pregnancy. That's just not true. If anyone has any questions about GD or is currently diagnosed, there's a new weekly check-in on Sunday. Stop by and read. It shows you what some of our typical meals are looking like as well as answers a whole lotta questions.
