Haven't told work yet! Help!

i really need some advice on how to go about this-when I interviewed for his position back in late October I was only 9-10 weeks, the hiring process took forever and I started at 20-21 weeks, I am only like 1-2 weeks Into my job and it's kind of hard to hide the bump even though I have up until now. How do I break it to my supervisor? And should I give a loose due date so I don't look like a complete liar(say I'm due June instead of May??). I know I can't get fired but I would like for my job to be available 6-10 weeks post baby!

  • You could always just stop hiding it and if needed, play dumb.  "Oh, I thought you realized/thought I mentioned it" whatever.

  • You have no obligation to say anything until your notice for Mat leave is due. You can waddle around, bump front and center and they can't say anything. Work hard, prove your worth as an employee and tell them when you have to.
It'll get to a point very soon that you don't need to say it, they'll be able to see it.
    Good luck!

  • FMLA won't cover you either way, so I say just keep working hard and if it comes up mention it.  I would give them adequate time for your leave though since you said the hiring process took forever unless your job is easy to fill in with others.  For me, I'm a nurse and they use float pool to cover maternity leaves so it isn't a huge deal when I leave as long as I give them as much notice as I can.  It all depends on the job you have.

  • It makes sense you didn't mention it in the interview, and even if you already had the job that's still normal not to mention it at work until at least 2nd tri. I don't think you have waited too long at all.

I was nervous to tell my boss but I figure it's certainly not new or unusual for a woman in my age group to be pregnant and have a baby! You shouldn't feel guilty that your life outside of work has continued regardless of your employment. I think the respectful thing would be to give work plenty of notice, especially if you intend to return to work. Ask your boss to meet with him/her and say you have some news to share, that you're pregnant and due in May. You could state your intention that you would like to make the transition to maternity leave as smooth as possible and ask what you can do to ensure that happens. Then ask if there's any paperwork or procedures for maternity leave you should start on. It's a happy time in your life and most people are supportive and happy for you. It's hard to have a secret like this so the sooner the better.

    Good luck!

  • I would tell them ASAP. I mean if you plan on coming back afterwards. Yes, they can't fire you, but they can judge your integrity for not mentioning it, or being a little shady about it, and that could affect your long-term position with them. I am already beginning my transition documents, and will continue until May, so that everything is covered. If you plan on taking maternity leave and then coming back, you will very soon have to begin discussing this with them.

I would ask for a private meeting with your boss, and then say, well I have some exciting news! I am expecting! I was waiting to make sure he/she was healthy and the pregnancy was going well before telling you. I just had my ultrasound (you can fudge this and say it was the day or a few days prior to your meeting, to make it look like you met with him right after the ultrasound), and he/she is doing great, so I wanted to tell you as soon as possible. I am due May X (I would not lie about this). I fully plan on returning to work (if you do) and would like to work up until XX date.

Focus on the positives (exciting, healthy, I am telling you the absolute soonest I felt comfortable). Everyone is excited for babies, so I am sure it will be fine. Good luck!

  • I got pregnant around the day I started my new job in August. I waited to tell my boss until just last week. I was nervous on how to tell him, since I work in a different state than he does. Once I got up the courage I just said that I was pregnant and when I was due. Made sure he knew I was planning on staying on after the baby comes, he was happy and supportive. I think we tend to over think or stress on these things, I know I did.
  • I started a job yesterday. I told hr yesterday.
