12-month immunizations and birthday party

How close (or far) did you guys schedule your baby's 12-month immunizations from their 1st birthday?  The nurse said it would be even more this time (7 shots) and I know some babies might be more sensitive to the effects, thus might affect them enjoying their party.

Re: 12-month immunizations and birthday party

  • Seven shots seems like an awful lot. I think mine had 3? Why is your LO getting that many?

Anyway, neither of mine had a reaction that lasted beyond that day. Usually their party was the weekend closest to their birthday and the shots sometime after.

  • My son had noticeable reactions to vaccinations when he was little (dead tired, fever, etc.), but by the time he was one, they didn't seem to ohase him. If you're worried, why not schedule the vaccs for sometime after his party?
  • Why are they doing 7 at once?  Do you know which ones they are?

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with that many at once.

As far as timing it with the birthday, I found that D was usually back to his normal self within 48 hours, but every baby is different (and it depends on the vaccination)...Maybe a week to be safe?

  • My Pedi broke the shots up between my DD's 1 year and 15 month apt so there would nto be so many at once. You should ask about that. She didnt have any bad reactions at 1 year so I think the party would not be affected.
  • I am guessing it is not 7 different shots, maybe 7 different vaccines combined into 1-3 shots.

  • I spoke with the nurse and it looks like it is six different shots with the flu vaccine already done.  They said they give the standard vaccinations(MMR, Hib, PCV, HepA) that age and typically all that once.  There is the option to space out if that was a concern.  It's just concerning since most of the moms here did not have their babies receive that many?  Then, she said the 16-month check up has NO shots and only one at the 18-month (HepA) so there is a big break (and relief) after. *sigh*

  • DD received 3 shots at her 1 year appointment.  She will receive more at 15 months.  I would be uncomfortable with her having 6 all in one appointment.  She seemed normal afterwards.  We had her birthday party 3 days later.  Good luck!
  • DS had 3 shots and one he drinks plus a finger stick to check for anemia. His 15 mo appt he had one shot. The 3 and the finger was plenty. We were warned the 1 yr shots can be brutal for reactions up to 10 days later so we scheduled the party the week before.
  • Different places do their immunization schedule differently. We're with Kaiser and our pediatrician warned us that at her 12 month there would be 6 needles so we can break them up into multiple appointments if we want. We're definitely breaking them up. I'm not comfortable with her getting that many vaccines at once.

She turns one on a Sunday so I'm scheduling her appointment for the week after.

This is helpful thanks since we're with Kaiser too which could explain it.  6 needles is definitely how it sounded.  I do wonder which ones should be "prioritized" to come first if we do break them up and how far apart between.  The nurses did say they do all immunizations at once all the time. :-S
