Canadians! Calling on all Canadians!

Just checking if any of the canadian members here would be interested in joining a "proudly Cansdian board" if we started one up. A place to talk over health care, shopping, schools and education systems, and other concerns like baby in the cold etc or just talk? What do u think?

Re: Canadians! Calling on all Canadians!

  • I'm from Alberta! And I agree with PP.

  • Ontario here!

  • I think a thread will work better, because I don't think there will be enough interest to sustain a board. I just don't think there is enough Canadian specific conversation, especially because experience in rural Canada will not as much in common with the big cities anyway.

Other than that, east coast representin'!

The weirdest thing is hearing people talk about betas and early ultrasounds. Hell, I don't even have an OB, just a family doctor. People in the US are really fancy pants with the testing. I don't know whether to feel jealous or kind of relieved that I don't have to worry about that stuff.

  • @Euphony‌ I'm pretty jealous of the ladies in the US. My family doctor told me I won't be able to hear the heartbeat until 12 weeks.
Do any of you ladies get to hear the heart beat earlier?
  • Hey girls! Ontario here!

I just got my first round of betas but only because I'm at fertility clinic - otherwise I wouldn't have!

  • I get jealous of the American ladies after the babies are born when they all talk about their pediatricians. My family Dr is my OB and pediatrician. I feel like she can't possibly have has much knowledge as someone who specializes. I also would love to have the option to call up my OB or pedi to ask questions!

My vote is that you should feel relieved. US doctors don't just do betas for the hell of it. Everyone who is having betas done is doing so due to a history of loss, pregnancy complications, or medicated cycles with an RE. It's definitely not something to be jealous of. Beta hell sucks.
Yes... I am thankful that my history does warrant testing. I didn't know that was the only reason these things were being done. I had gotten impression that early ultrasounds at least were something some doctors did as a matter of practice.

I also think where I live in Canada is an issue. The Atlantic provinces are particularly poor and the specialists are few and far between, so you would likely travel hours to see an RE. We have a bit if a doctor problem, and I am damn lucky to even have a family doctor.

  • @CFearsy That is good to know. Believe me, I am very grateful for the easy time I have had, and hope things continue to go well. I hope that for all of us.

  • Another ontario ftm here. I would love a canadian thread but another board would probably be a waste.

My first appointment is Wednesday (start of week 6) this is because I underwent surgery for a broke leg before finding out I was pregnant and also my family doc is going on vacation. Not sure how much I will be able to find out so early

  • Alright my Canadian friends, I have been working for the past 6 months at my job in Alberta, I have been miserable and under so much stress since I started working there. My boss finally pushed me over the edge with micromanaging and insulting me, basically asking me to quit (it's gotten worse since I shared our pregnancy) and I am looking for new work, likely quitting next week.

In Alberta, the employer doesn't have to pay mat leave (employment insurance does), and since I won't be at this next job at least a year (obviously) I won't have guaranteed job security so I don't feel bad not telling them I am pregnant, but I am worried I am being rude. I just can't stay where I am now, it's not good for this baby, me or my marriage. I don't have much time before I will be showing too (almost 8 weeks now).

How long after I get a new job should I keep it a secret? What would you do?

  • Canadian thread is such a good idea!! Another east coaster here!!!
  • Alberta FTM here!
  • I'm an Edmonton FTM and I had my first OB appointment when I was 6 weeks. They scheduled a NST for 11 weeks, but I called asking to do an earlier scan for dating, and they were super helpful and had no problems scheduling me for another ultrasound :) all I had to do in Edmonton to get an OB was just ask for a referral from my regular doctor. I'm also a doctor that works in a referral clinic so I always see the merit in going to someone specialised in the area. So if anyone wants an OB or doesn't want to wait, just ask your doc!!
