Too cold for a walk?

Ransoms thread got mt thinking- what temperature is too cold for you to take LO outside and what climate are you used to? Hard to make a poll for this, but I will try! The temp listed in the option means you wouldn't go for a walk if it were colder than that temp in Fahrenheit

Re: Too cold for a walk?

  • The high for our New Years 5k was 28 but if it had been lower, like below 10, I probably would have skipped taking LO.

As long as the air isn't too cold to breathe, with the right layers and wearing him, the cold doesn't worry me. Heck, my tank was completely damp by the time we finished walking the 5k, so the real trick is trying to dress warm enough but not too warm so we don't overheat!

  • I said 20 and I'm in a cold climate. If it were sunny and low wind if probably go down to 10.

  • I try not to take LO out when it is 40 or below because real feel is probably in the 30s and it's just not worth it to me for her to get sick. I'm super worried about her getting sick.

  • I voted 20 from a warm climate. Meaning, anything above 20 we'll go for a "walk" which really means errands, I don't go for leisure walks in the winter at all. And is philly a warm climate?

40+ - from a cold climate here NW PA, lake effect snow territory - I worry that I wouldn't have him dressed warmly enough.  We did go out on a few 40+ degree days

This is the only bad thing I've found about giving birth at the end of fall. Not a lot of time for walking to help me get back into shape during maternity leave.

I'm in Missouri and voted 40 cold climate. A couple weeks ago it was 60here, but a windy chilly 60 and I wouldn't take LO out for a walk.

60in dec/jan is not as warm as 60 in apr/may LOL.

ETA: now we're ranging from 0-30as the high. Should've appreciated that 60 more!

It all depends on the type of day. I've seen days where it has been 10C (50F, I think) and because of the wind and cloud cover been freezing cold. Other days it has been -10C (15F) and beautiful outside because there has been little wind and the sun was shining. As long as there was no wind chill, I'd be comfortable taking LO out in -10C weather.

ETA - I once worked in a school division where the policy was to continue to send the kids outside for recess until the temp dipped to -40C (-40F) with the wind. If you live in a cold climate, you've got to get used to it at some point.

Yes! For me it's about the wind more than just the temperature. I can bundle LO up and wear him to keep him warm, but I can't protect against that wind.
  • I'll go out in the 30s just to prevent myself from going insane, but it's harder to motivate if it's below 38 or so. I'm in the DC area so I put cold climate, but it's not nearly as cold as where a lot of people live! Last week it was in the teens and I was dying.

  • Took all 4 kids to the zoo yesterday with temps in the mid 50's and that was pushing it. Luckily my SIL gave me a fleece suit thing to use in the stroller so LO was nice and warm.

And no, she's not suffocating herself, there is space between the hood and her face, just not much. Every time I moved it away from her face she would snuggle back into it.
