NWMR: Big Boy Underwear

The Potty Training board is a little slow, so I'm posting it here. LO knows how to communicate that he needs to go potty, he knows how to sit on the toilet and he goes when he wants to- not when I encourage him too. For example, I'll ask him if he needs to go and walk him to the bathroom- he'll sit down and then hop right up saying he's done (even when he hasn't used it) but then when I put a pull up on him and lay him down, he poops or pees. At school they work with them. My question is, would it be a good idea to put him in big boy underwear so that he's more uncomfortable using the bathroom on himself and which could possibly help with him using the potty regularly at home? Sorry if this is long, DS is 2 1/2 and I'm worried he'll be behind. I don't have a clue about these things. FWIW, I've used incentives when encouraging him to use the potty and once he used it and got so much praise and a piece of candy. I don't know what else to do.

  • I think it certainly couldn't hurt to put him in underwear.  (FWIW, our DC only uses underwear once they start training - no pull ups allowed.  Building on that, we did the same at home and only used pull-ups at night.)  We used the Gerber cotton underwear/training pants that are thicker through the middle (so that they absorb at least a little bit).  I got them pretty cheap at Walmart/Target.  I think it was 3 pack for $7 or so?  Would be worth a shot.
Good to know! I will have to make a trip to Target, thank you!

  • DS saw the other kids at school in big boy underwear which was a huge catalyst for us.  He got to pick out his own and was super excited to wear Lightening McQueen and Mater underwear.  So, that itself was a huge motivator.  We also did a potty sticker chart and he loved earning stickers and getting rewards after 10 stickers.  And, he got 1 Annie's gummy bunny for #1 and 2 for #2 as an instant edible reward.

He had been using a potty seat since randomly from about 18-20 months and he had been using the toilets at school starting in the 2 year old room, but we didn't push PT and move to underwear until he was 2.7 and he was essentially trained in a weekend.
We're at the 2.6 mark so hopefully this will motivate my DS as well. I have some shopping to do!

  • DD is about the same age (will be 3 in July) and if you put a diaper on her, she is going to go in it. But she will use the potty for peeing if she's in underwear. (Not for pooping... See my vent.) So yeah, I would try undies. And Dinosaurs Wear Underpants is an awesome book. It convinced DD she wanted to wear underwear.

We did this too, and our daycare operates the same way, only I got them on Amazon instead of Target. They sell 4 packs on amazon and I've only ever seen the 2 packs at target a few times. It seems like they often don't have them (where we are at least).

One thing, though, regarding naps is that DS's DC does permit pull ups while sleeping until they move up to the 3 year old room (as in they don't move them up until they can stay dry for a nap and are otherwise using the potty independently).

He really didn't start sleeping through naps without an accident until recently (he's 3), and he's better at it at daycare than he is at home. At night he still sleeps in a night time diaper.

ETA: once he got a little more consistent, we let him pick out fun underwear with different characters - a bit more fun than the training pants which are either a solid color or have some sports images on them.

  • I wouldn't worry about him being behind.  2 1/2 is still young, especially for boys.
  • With my first we did a variation on the all in with underwear training. She wanted a potty and surprised me by going on it 5x the first day. We 'trained'. It was about a month of stress/mess/misery, but she was fully PT'd (except nap/night) after that. DS had been going occasionally, I tried 'training' but he lost interest quickly so I didn't push. A little before 2.5 he asked for underwear and literally had 1 accident in a week.

I was also afraid of having a 3-4 year old that wouldn't train, but I am so glad I waited. I would encourage using the potty before bath/bed etc and you can try underwear, but personally I wouldn't push it based on my experience.

With DS being 2.6 and showing interest in the potty every so often, I feel like a little push into picking out big boy underwear will motivate him. If it doesn't affect anything then I most certainly won't push him. I will continue to "encourage" and just hope that he shows more and more interest.

  • Thank you everyone for the great tips!!

  • One more quick tip - DS1 had #1 mastered within just a few weeks of turning 2, but didn't get #2 down until he was almost 3.  It was a looooooong time before that kid would poop in a potty (got splashed at daycare early on in the process, freaked out, and then just refused to do it).  Don't stress if there's a gap between mastering the two skills.  It will happen. :)
That's the funny thing, DS has done #2 before (maybe 2 or 3 months ago), so I'm hoping with wearing the underwear it will get him to do it more in the potty. I'm not going to push him though. Thank you! :)
