Told to stop breastfeeding while pregnant

I am 7 weeks and still breastfeeding my 16 month old. I called into the office to let them know about brown discharge and when I told the nurse I'm breastfeeding she cut me off and said 'nope, you have to stop. You need to be done in the next few days'

They haven't seen me for this pregnancy yet and I think it is ridiculous to tell me this over the phone.

I'm really upset. I made another appointment at another clinic 45 minutes away. Now I'm worried about driving that far through rural areas. :/

I don't know what I'm looking for .... Reassurance maybe? I don't want to stop breastfeeding and plan on tandem nursing if DD wants to. Being told by a super insensitive person over the phone that I have to quit has me in tears.

Re: Told to stop breastfeeding while pregnant

  • I did have one midwife say I should start weaning when pregnant because it could possibly cause early labor in the third tri, but another midwife said it wouldn't be an issue. At 7 weeks, I don't see a reason to wean. It is likely not causing your spotting. If you are to miscarriage (and I really hope you don't), it will most likely be bc the embryo is somehow not viable and it would have nothing to do with breastfeeding.

FWIW, I nursed DS1 until he was 20 months and I was 16 weeks pregnant. I weaned bc both he and I were ready mentally and my supply was low. It was not bc of concerns of how it would affect my pregnancy.

  • I am 9 weeks pregnant and still breastfeeding my 15 month old. I just had my first appointment with the OB for this pregnancy last week and she said nothing about needing to wean. From what I've read, that's a pretty outdated recommendation. I like the LLL FAQ on this topic.

That's a very outdated recommendation.  Unless you know you are high risk, that is bad advice.  I'd be looking for another provider ... and, I'd be sure to let the office know why I decided to change providers, too.

    And, congratulations!

My husband wanted me to call and tell them off lol. Just for them being so insensitive. ( I was in tears when he came home ) I found a new provider in the next town over and it sounds like they will support my choice to continue breastfeeding.
