Do you cut your DC's hair?

I think it is time to take my DS to a kiddie barber shop but my H wants me to continue cutting it.  Is it worth the $ to take them to someone else?

Re: Do you cut your DC's hair?

  • I've always taken DS to someone to get it cut and every time it ends up looking like crap (we've tried many different places), so I'm thinking about just cutting it myself. ?No sense in spending $15 + gas and energy if it's just going to look like I cut it anyway :-)

  • I cut DS1's hair every other time. His hair grows really fast that he needs a cut all the time. I don't have the time or the money to take him to the barber shop all the time, but I'm no good at cutting the top part. So when it starts getting a little long, I trim and clean up the forehead, ears and back parts. Then by the time that grows out again, the top starts looking shaggy so I take him back to the barber shop.

My sister sent me an old instruction book she had about how to cut little boys hair. DS won't sit still long enough for me to practice and I'm terrified of messing it up. When he gets older, I might try it.

Oh and we don't have any kiddie places here so I take him to a regular mens barber shop. From the kiddie places I've seen in other areas, my option is cheaper anyway.

  • I just do it myself. They have both only had trims a few times anyway. I cannot imagine them actually sitting still and spending the money, so for now I do it. It's barely noticeable though when I am finished.
  • No way, I would completely butcher it.  I tried to help DH shave his head one time and it was baaaad.

I've always taken DS to a professional - lots of places are under $10 for a kid's cut.

  • It costs $12.00 for the kiddie place by us. My mom just trimmed ds's hair a few nights ago and he holds still a lot better for a stranger than he did for my mom.
  • I really want to start doing it myself though my husband objects. I have no confidence that I'd get it right but I figure I'll learn eventually.  Are there any how-to videos online?  :)

So we do take our son to a Kids Kutz place.  We have taken him to a barber and to a regular Great Clips but the Kids place is the fastest and friendliest for kids.  I cringe every time I pay though- with tip it ends up being about $20.  We go probably every 1 1/2 months.

So is it worth the money?  I guess for us it depends on who you talk to- my husband or me.  :)  I think if you don't mind paying, go for it.

  • There is no way I'd trust my hair cutting skills enough to do DS's hair myself.
