Long Term Birth Control options?

Hi everyone!
I have gone back to my doctor and began having BC discussions. I have just had my second child and do not plan to have more. I not keen on the idea of going in the pill again. He suggested we do Essure but I have seen some horrible things on the Web about damage, issues etc (Erin Brockovich is taking up the cause!).

Would love to hear what other mamas are using, experience with other methods besides the pill. DH is willing to get snipped so that is an option too!! TIA!

Re: Long Term Birth Control options?

  • I just got the Mirena IUD. No issues so far

  • If you look hard enough you'll find lawsuits filed about all kinds of birth control

  • DH will get snipped when we're done.  Or I'll get my tubes tied during a RCS.

  • When we are 110% sure we're done (we'll probably have 1 more), DH will get snipped.

Right now we won't do anything for BC. I'm BF-ing (I know it's not 100%).
If I was going to do a longer term but not permanent BC option, I would do a non-hormonal IUD. Coming off the pill sucked for me, and after I quit taking it, I realized it had been negatively affecting my libid, sso I don't want any hormone options anymore.
If I wanted short-term BC, we'd use fertility charting and condoms during my fertile days.

  • I just got Mirena today and it was NBD. 5 min with a speculum, some minor cramping and it was in.

A coworker's wife got Essure after their 2nd baby. 6 months after getting it done she was KU again because it didn't work.

  • I just got the Nexplanon done on Friday, so I'm super jazzed about not having to think about bc for 3 years. Plus no period? Major plus!
  • We are definitely done over here. ☺️ DH is willing to get snipped so am considering that route - though my dr really seemed to tout Essure. Mirena may def be an option.
  • Look into the Paraguard IUD, my doc recommended it to me and although I won't be doing BC (just tracking fertile days ect.) it's what I would pick if I was going to use something. Like @ClrkKntismyAE‌ said, it's non hormonal (the copper in it acts as the BC by not allowing anything to implant) and I believe you can have it infor up to 10 years.
