Weird Problem, possible TMI. Help!

didnt really notice until today, but my nipples are crusty? They're covered in white dry scaly dead skin. The texture and color is also totally different.
So, 3 questions:
1- Is anyone else in the same boat?
2-What the hell is this? Is it normal?
3-HOW DO I FIX IT!?!?

Re: Weird Problem, possible TMI. Help!

  • They aren't like, a hard kind a of crusty. If that makes any sense.

  • I'm ashy like crazy all over. So maybe it's the same thing? Even w lotion and drinking water it seems to be harder for me to have not-dry skin since I got pregnant. I try to just keep up from the inside out by drinking more water, but I use lotion too.
  • My skin has been pretty dry in general but I haven't had any nipple issues. I'd treat it like dry/flaky skin anywhere else- gently exfoliate in the shower with a washcloth and try to keep them moisturized.

  • My guess is that you are leaking milk. Might want to stock up on some breast pads. I started leaking at 4 months with my 1st. With my 4th, I barely leaked at all. Hope it is the same this time.
  • +1 for the colostrum. Please don't freak out. Moisturize and shower :)

There are so many more gross things you'll deal with in pregnancy and  motherhood.

  • I've been using a washcloth in the shower to exfoliate my nipples. It hurt at first but they are toughening up now. Then after shower, lotion then up! That has worked for me!!

  • I've noticed some dead skin/peeling. I have just been trying to exfoliate well in the shower and then I lather with coconut oil at least once a day!

  • YES. It's like my nipples are leaking, but not enough to actually ever be wet... Just a weird buildup? FTM here so wtf do I know. They are so dry and I've been putting mama bee belly butter on just my nipples, not my breasts/chest as it made me break out there badly.

Having the same issue exactly and I believe it's colostrum. Just been trying to stay on top of exfoliating and using lotion.

  • I just noticed colostrum leaking today. It surprises the hell out of me. Thought it was kind of early for that but apparently not, glad I saw this thread! Gonna buy some reusable breast pads so it doesn't get all over my bras/shirts.

  • I have the same problem but it seems more like dry skin than colustrom.

  • Keep them moisturized. I slather shea butter on mines twice a day. It used to be just once a day but 8 noticed that they were getting very dry so I upped to twice. Sheath butter is my answer to everything being that I have eczema.
  • I haven't noticed colostrum or crust yet but I was thinking yesterday that my skin was so dry and flakey on my areola. I get very dry in the winter so I didn't even associate it at all with pregnancy
  • Yes ! Itchy too. Try organic coconut oil
  • It is probably colostrum.  That happened a lot with me when I was pregnant with DS.  So far it hasn't happened with me this time around.

  • I have that problem. My nipples are so dry that they are peeling. It's so uncomfortable and one is almost raw in one spot. I'm going to ask my doc about it tomorrow.
