Food sensitivity moms

Food sensitivities are normally accompanied by screaming and lots of extreme fussiness, yes?

  • R has a weird rash on her cheeks today, and has green mucous poop.

Ped told me not to worry about the occasional mucous, green has been coming and going (at least partially because of my letdown/oversupply issues, but it's being worked on), but the rash was new today.
She's not any fussier than usual, although she's currently incredibly pissed that I'm making her go to sleep. I haven't eaten anything new or out of the ordinary, but I also don't track what I eat at all so can't say for sure.

Also A had very sensitive skin, as do I, so just making sure I'm not secretly poisoning my kid with my breastmilk.

  • I had soy sauce last night though, and I don't think I've ever eaten anything with soy in it since she's been born...

  • That's what happened to R with our oatmeal disaster. No fussiness or gas though. We are 3 weeks out with no oatmeal and things are returning to normal. Just my anecdotal evidence.

  • It could be the weather. E always has rashes when it gets cold and dry. Even C has some issues in winter and his skin has been awesome.

  • Calvin may be mpi I'm not sure yet. He is not a fussy baby at all and that threw me off. He was just really gurgley all the time and then after I had eliminated it for awhile and slipped he got some awful awful acid poop and rash (but he was also teething and still coming off abx, so I'm still not sure).

  • Well the good news is that my diet is 95% or more unprocessed/whole from scratch foods, so pretty easy for me to cut stuff out if there in in fact a sensitivity to anything.

The bad news is that R's rash has gotten way worse and she's clearly very uncomfortable when pooping today. There was a tinge of blood in at least one of her diapers. :(

I'm still not putting my money on a food sensitivity quite yet. Man I hate seeing my kid in pain though.

Also, I remembered I've had soy sauce on my sushi a few weeks ago, and she would have reacted, right? A sensitivity wouldn't just appear out of nowhere?

sorry to say yes a sensitivity can appear from seemingly nowhere. Your best bet would be to track everything you eat for a while along with any reactions/possible reactions if you think a food sensitivity is possible.

  • How much dairy are you consuming?  I know I was still eating dairy up until P was probably 8 weeks before it was clear that she wasn't tolerating it.  From 8 weeks on it just got worse and worse.

  • Poor baby :-( I hope she feels better very soon.

From what I've learned, the sensitivities can just come up pretty much anytime. We fed R the oatmeal for 2 weeks before he started having problems. The MPI symptoms didn't show up until he was 7 weeks old.

My dog has a lot of food sensitivities too. Before we took her off commercial dog food, she would eat one food for months with no issues, then one day all of a sudden get sick.

I hope you can figure it out soon.

This was us with A as well. I thought I was fine until one bad reaction after some Mac 'n cheese around 8 or 10 weeks. And now eating just one cookie made with butter will set her off.

  • The green mucosy poop with a tinge of blood probably means there's a sensitivity.  Sorry. :(  At 4.5 weeks N had blood and green mucosy poop, so it seemed to come out of nowhere but looking back she had green mucosy poop for at least a week before that.  She had always been a really gassy but not overly fussy baby.

I cut dairy and soy products (but still eat things with dairy in them, like cereal, cookies, etc.) and the gas and fussiness decreased but would come roaring back occasionally along with the blood and green poop so I tracked what I ate and it turns out that the biggest culprit for her is eggs.  That sensitivity got gradually worse.  It started with me not being able to eat eggs for breakfast and now I can't even eat a teaspoon of mayo on a sandwich.  So unfortunately sensitivities are not a dichotomous yes or no thing, but seem to change over time.
