High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone else have MTHFR??

My name is Kristi my edc is 8/14/15. I have 2 boys 10 & 5. Ive been married to my high school sweetheart! Together for 17 years now! I've always done fertility meds to get pregnant. Randomly in April 2014 I got pregnant on my own! We thought we were done having kids. We got excited but at 9 weeks it ended with no heart beat. My kids & I were devestated. I'm an obgyn nurse for 13 years. I had explained it to many patients but never went through it. Life changing! So we decided to go back on clomid & have a baby!! I had another very early miscarriage, so we did some extra testing. Turns out I have MTHFR. I have to do lovenox every day. (Blood thinners) it's working this time! I conceived on clomid 100mg days 3-7.

Thank you for listening!
Anyone else have MTHFR?

Re: Anyone else have MTHFR??

  • I do have MTHFR but for the life of me can't remember which kind.  I take a daily baby aspirin, along with extra folic acid to help counteract it.  I am on Lovenox, but because I've had a DVT in the past, not for the MTHFR.  My hematologist probably wouldn't have put me on Lovenox if my only issue were MTHFR but I know the different mutations affect different things.

I'm glad your protocol is working.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Yup, I have mthfr (two copies of the C version) as well as two markers for factor v leiden so I take lovenox shots daily, a low dose aspirin, and extra folic acid. I'm trying to get on metanx but it costs a fortune and isn't covered by my insurance.

Glad you were able to find out you have it and get on a good regime that's working!

  • It is so nice to hear that you have two children and one on the way.  I am so sorry for your other losses and I can relate as I have had two miscarriages.  I was just diagnosed with MTHFR and I also have a prothrombin gene mutation.  My hematologist believes now that we know that I have two mutations, that this is most likely causing the miscarriages.  I want to be hopeful that we will have better luck with the third try.  I had to have two d & c's because the first one did not fully work and I was still bleeding and having cramping and my HCG levels were not going all the way down. My last d&c was just on last Friday.  I am trying to cope with everything while also trying to stay very positive that we will be able to have our own baby with enough faith and the help of my doctors.  Going back to the hematologist to get a plan in about a week.  Have been doing some reading tonight and saw that patients with the MTHFR mutation cannot take folic acid - they have to take folate or methylfolate as folic acid cannot be synthesized.  Is this true for you ladies?  How has lovenox been affecting you during your pregnancies?  Did your doctor put you on lovenox before conceiving? My doctor wants to discuss placing me on lovenox prior to conceiving to decrease my chances for lovenox, but I am worried about potential risks of prolonged anticoagulants.  Any advice would be so appreciated!
  • I have MTHFR - compound hetero. I have healthy twins 3.5 yo conceived naturally and I lost a baby girl at 10 days old due to birth defects (not related to MTHFR- she had no neural tubs defects) and am now 14wks pregnant with my 4th. I've never had a miscarriage. I'm also not on aspirin or lovenox bc my homocysteine levels were low-normal (and that's what ultimately causes the clots). I attribute those low-Normal levels to taking lots of b12 and being on prenatals with folate. But I am nervous and plan to ask for frequent homocysteine checks throughout the pregnancy. Good luck

My RE waited until I had a positive beta before starting lovenox. I wouldn't be on lovenox if I just had MTHFR but I also have another clotting disorder PAI-1.

Prior to my diagnosis, I had a DS a little on the small side at 40w6d. He is healthy.

I'm 20w5d now and it appears to be going along fine!

    Good luck!

  • Sorry to hear about your losses! Praying! You start the lovenox ASAP when you find out your pregnant. No real side effects for me. You are right you really should take methofolate & not regular follic acid of you have mthfr.
