Feeding therapy/ swallow study

Anyone else in this boat?

We've been going to feeding therapy for bad latch (bottle), no pacing when eating and decreased food intake. Swallow study is next week. Wondering if any other lo's have gone. If so, did you lo also have reflux?

Re: Feeding therapy/ swallow study

  • My son had a swallow study a few weeks after his birth for pacing issues that caused very low desats.  He has a good latch and when paced, is fine.  He has laryngomalacia.  My first LO had terrible reflux, but not this LO.  The swallow study is painless.  Just cover up with the vests.

  • Very interesting! My LO had desats in the NICU only when eating.  It actually delayed our being able to take him home for two weeks because every time he had a desat they had to keep him another 3 days.  No one ever said squat about it being a swallowing issue!

  • Yeah, they said it was probably neurological and he would mature, or maybe it was just due to his undeveloped larynx.  They just did the swallow study because they thought he might be aspirating.  We also had to stay in the NICU for a long time due to these desats and I was pretty stabby by the end because I knew he would be okay.  They finally let us go with an oxygen monitor and after I stayed over and proved I could feed him and keep him from going too low.  He never does that well with a bottle but breastfeeding is, I think, an easier position to eat and breathe.  Plus, he was always getting different nurses and it took a bit of practice to feed him with a bottle so he wouldn't desat.  Now he pauses himself to breathe, but still doesn't quite do things like other babies.  If he was aspirating, I'm pretty sure we'd have been there forever.
  • Thank you! I'm concerned she's aspirating a bit as she's still choking at feedings and she's 6 months. She doesn't want to bottle feed, has reflux, etc.

We haven't been able to find anything neurological with her but maybe she's just neurologically behind? She literally just started pacing her feedings (when she eats) about two weeks ago.
