Cloth Diapering

NB stash and questions

Hi everyone,

I don't post a lot on TB, but I have been reading and gathering information regarding cloth diapering from this thread.  I have been watching youtube videos and doing some internet research and would really like to give this a try.  I have my first LO due in May and was very interested in starting CD as soon as he comes home.  Despite having done research, I am still questioning several things and was hoping you all could answer some questions and or critique what I have in mind as far as a newborn stash.

So I want to go with the recommended 36 changes for a newborn.  I was thinking prefolds or workhorses/covers and some AIOs.  Since reading that newborn stashes have a good re-sale value I went ahead and bought some KangaCare 2 pk cloth diapers for newborn (it doesn't say lil joeys so I am confused as to what exactly they are).  After this purchase, I'm not really sure where to go from here. Here are my questions:

1.)  Do prefolds or workhorses have better absorbency?
2.)  What do you do about overnight diapering a newborn when they start sleeping for longer stretches?  Do you add an insert to the pre fold or workhorse?
3.)  If you have a heavy wetter, what's your overnight CD routine?
4.)  What do you like to use for easier/faster overnight diapering?
5.)  Has anyone found that NB AIOs work well for overnight?

I guess my biggest concern is that he will soak through his diapers and I won't be prepared or know what to do with that.  I'd hate to buy a stash of 36 prefolds and then find that it does not work for me at all.  I've read some recommend a mix of prefolds and workhorses and I'm leaning toward doing that.

Thanks!

Re: NB stash and questions

  • I'd get a dozen prefolds and a dozen flats for daytime, 6 workhorses, and 6 AIOs in a perfect world. Obv plus 6-8 covers.

Workhorses absorb more, so you can use those at first when you get longer stretches of sleep. But honestly for a newborn you don't need a specific overnight solution. Your LO will most likely be in OS dipes by the time they sleep more than 3 hours at a time.

My toddler uses best bottoms with a doubler and a hemp insert. My 7mo uses sbish fitteds with flip covers.

  • 1) they should absorb about the same

    2) I sometimes add an insert to my baby's ON prefold, as he sleeps 4-6 hrs regularly. He didn't really do this until out of true nb size, he's in small a now.

    3) prefold + hemp doublers. At 18months, my older son uses just 1 doubler, but a few months ago, he was using 3 doublers. We have tried a few other things, fitteds and pockets, but this worked best for us.

    4) prefolds are what we use ON. we have some pockets and AIOS that are faster/easier, but prefolds work better for longer periods.

5)Not really. In the very beginning they can, because you change as often as during the day, but nb AIOs like BG or ill joeys will not last more than 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. Most babies outgrow the absorbency of these very very soon, even during the day. If you are going longer at night to need some ON diaper, these will probably be outgrown anyway.

  • If you order from GMD just grab some small hemp doublers and call it a day. They won't be necessary for awhile but then you can feel prepared.

"Nighttime" kind of doesn't exist on many levels for most newborns so I wouldn't worry about using anything different unless it's for ease of use reasons (like an AIO).

  • Thank you so much for your responses.  I think I'm overanalyzing everything and trying to be "prepared" when in reality, I will not be completely prepared for life with a newborn!

  • I second the recommendation for fitteds at night. They were so much easier to deal with than prefolds in those bleary early morning hours, and they hold more than most AIOs on the off chance that the baby sleeps a longer stretch. You may want to grab some microfleece to cut up for liners. Both my boys have wetness sensitivities.

  • @unaveragejane‌ dumb question- I thought putting mf next to baby's skin was a big no no? Am I confused?

  • There are two mf's in the cd world.
    1. Microfiber should never go against their skin. It dries it out too much.
    2. Microfleece is safe against skin. It's just a thin fleece that does hold much moisture, so it makes a great liner.

Microfleece is very thin and super soft. Microfibre is thicker (thus more absorbant) and kind of sticky/prickly feeling. Like, you can't run your fingers along it, the fibers will grip your fingers a bit. Bummis makes nice and cheap microfleece liners ($5/5) if you don't want to make your own.

  • Workhorses definitely absorb more and are great at night time for quick changes especially since baby acts like she is being murdered during every diaper change. The quicker/easier the better at night time. She is 6 days old and when she pees she soaks a GMD newborn prefold so we've only been using those during the day then workhorses and AIO's (for DH since he's still getting the hang of changing diapers) at night. It's working well so far.

  • I hope you don't mind asking about my stash as I have very similar questions and concerns about starting a nb stash and my baby is due in a few weeks. I am new and I've read several threads and sites but I have never posted over here.

I was thinking about getting 6 gmd newborn workhorses, 2 dozen newborn prefolds, and 8 covers, 2 thirsties duo, 2 thirsties newborn, 2 econobum, 1 rumparoos and 1 sweetpea. Do you think these covers will be good for the prefolds and workhorses?

I already have 4 lil joeys and one thirsties aio size 1. I am thinking about getting one more pack of lil joeys to make it 6 aio.

Do you think this is good? Or am I totally off base. I'm most concerned about covers and don't really want to spend a lot of money on the covers as I plan to buy a lot of aio once she is able to fit in them for convenience and daycare.

    Thank you for your help!

Thank you all so much.  @amiej1227-that sounds like a good stash and plenty of changes and options, but I'll let the experts weigh in on that.

Zulily had a sale on Fuzzibunz and I purchased 4 of their one size pocket diapers.  With the elastics on the legs and waist I was able to make them smaller and they don't look too bulky.  Anybody have experience with these on a newborn?

  • Also, I've read that the thirsties size 1 are good over prefolds for a newborn.  I assume these are the thirsties duo wrap diaper cover?

That sounds good. If you want more AIO's though, get something besides lil' joeys. They don't last very long for absorbency (like 3 weeks here). Newborn Simplex are awesome and will fit a very long time.

  • @amiej1227‌ You've chosen some good covers. The only ones that might not work over the workhorses are the Econobum. They run tiny according to the GMD website. If you want something bigger maybe try Blueberry Mini Coveralls or more RaRs or Thirsites Duos.

In addition to the Simplex, I ordered some Blueberry Basix nb AIOs, thinking they were the same. They're a little different, but they were my favorite AIOs.

  • Great advice thanks! I'll add some simplex, I got their one size and I think I'll like those. So I'll get a couple newborn sizes.

As for the econobum I was just going to put the prefolds in those but maybe look at the others instead. They were just cheaper compared to the others.

  • I was wondering all these same things!!! Thanks for asking OP!
  • @JNU76‌ what is the difference? I get a little confused by basix and simplex because to me they have the same look. I haven't seen the basix but the os simplex seems nice. So I assume the newborn is similar?

They're very similar, but the Basix are a little softer and fluffier. The fit is similar, and it has that flap that agitates out in the wash like the Simplex. I might have gotten them on sale, but I think they're less expensive, too.

FWIW, I'll be posting 2 of each on the swap board in a month or two- this is definitely my last baby.
