My 3 YO is sucking on her arm

My 3 YO has been sucking on her arm and giving herself hickies for several months now.  It seems to coincide with the arrival of her little sister.  We have tried ignoring it and addressing it.  We've also tried a reward chart, but they take forever to heal and we couldn't tell if she had actually stopped sucking or not.  The problem is we have never seen her do it.  She's sucking on her arm either first thing in the morning while in bed, or overnight.  She won't really tell us when she sucks and claims to have stopped even though the marks keep appearing.  I'm not really sure what to do at this point.  Any tips on how to get the marks to heal or how to get her to stop?

  • Is it a big deal? Hicky marks don't hurt or anything. If it's something she's doing to self-soothe, I don't think I'd have a problem with it. It's like thumb sucking, which I would interfere with either for a three year old if it wasn't causing other problems (like delaying speech or something)

I agree with this. My DD is 3 almost 4 and she sucks on her fingers while sleeping. I hate it but I'm not really sure it's worth a fight. She is doing it because she feels she needs it and I don't think the negatives outweigh that. I've met with the dentist and they didn't seem concerned yet.

We obviously don't allow it outside of bed and like your daughter she always says she doesn't do that but I'm not ready to stress her out about it.
