WWYD Old BG Pockets

At 7 weeks old, LO is outgrowing our beloved NB stash of prefolds. A friend gave me her old BG pockets, 17 of them. They've gone through two kids and are in pretty sad condition. The elastic is completely stretched and the aplix is shot, it still works but not securely. I'm not sure what to do. I know there are ways to repair them and I'd definitely rather use them if I can, but am not sure if its worth the trouble. Would you:

  • Yeah, if you are crafty and have time, great. Maybe fix half of them and use them for daycare diapers, and donate the rest. If you can afford to buy new then that's probably what I would do at this point.

  • I think the charity you mean is Jake's Diapers.

I'd replace the elastic, clean up the aplix as best I could and then swap out the aplix for snaps a diaper or two at a time.  Trying to do them all at once is a real pain in the backside.
  • If you have snap pliers, I'd fix a few up.

If you don't, donate them or see if someone wants them free for shipping.

    Also, check the PUL first.

  • I'm with TJ. If you are crafty and have the time it might be worth it to replace elastics (easy) and snap convert (harder but still not too bad if you already have the pliers). If you don't have a lot of free time or aren't crafty, donate and buy new.

  • I'm another SS - donate. I've never loved the way BGs fit on DS so I would rather they go to someone who needs or likes them more than I do.
  • Thanks for the responses!

@Chickypoo2468‌ sadly no prints. These are from 5 years ago so before BG had prints, I think.

Yeah, I don't have a ton of time what with an infant and all. I have a sewing machine so the elastic replacement seems doable but no pliers.

I ll probably go with @Kelly11235‌ suggestion
And maybe only keep some of them and donate the rest. And come to think of it, I hope to have another LO so it makes sense to buy new.

  • When I was pregnant, I bought about 20 used bg's in the same condition as yours, shot elastics and aplix. At that time I thought I'd save tons of money and fix them up to use. I converted them all to snaps myself and had my sister help me replace all the elastics. I'm regretting it now. I never checked to see how well the snaps worked until I had them all prepped and ready to go. Most of them snap, but they are very difficult to unsnap. I got so discouraged that they are all just sitting in a box in Q's closet. I'm not sure what I will (and can) do with them now :(

  • You can fix the snaps :D
Either by pushing them around with an awl, or repressing them, or by removing them and replacing them.

Failing that, you can still donate them.
  • @Kelly11235‌ I made sure to have them centered when I first put them in, so I'm thinking they need to be pressed more. If they are done correctly, shouldn't they work as well as the snaps that already come on diapers? I didn't know if maybe they are just normally more difficult. Some of mine are so tough that I'm afraid I'll rip the diaper just unsnapping them. I bought them from kamsnaps if that makes a difference.

  • You can also donate to The Rebecca Foundation
  • Are any of them Easter diapers? 5 years ago is about the right time for the Easters to have been released. (2009 I think)

You can also try to sell them as diapers in need of repair on the BST boards, you might be able to make enough cash to buy 2-3 new diapers that you could use.
