Hospital Bill Rant

I'm sorry but I just need to get this out...
We had to take our 3 month old son to the ER this past Monday night (1/5/15) as requested by our pediatrician for lots of blood in his diaper. We had to immediately put him on Neocate formula to help with the irritation due to severe allergies. Long story short, we received a bill in the mail yesterday (after collections called us on Friday 1/9/15 before we even received he bill in the mail!) and oh my goodness!!
We have very good insurance thankfully through BCBS, but on the bill we noticed something pretty outrageous... $150 for one, yes ONE can of Neocate formula!

    Wow so sorry, how much is a can normally? Can you call financial services and talk to them? Find out why the mark up is so high.
    Healthcare is so pricey now a days we are still paying off our l&d and I work for the hospital and have insurance through them.

    That's insane, shit like that makes me realise how lucky we are in the UK to have the NHS. Sorry you had to go through all that worry, hope things with your LO are better now.

    A can is normally $50, which is still outrageous! We are in a limbo bc our pharmacy prescription won't cover it and our medical insurance has to have "prior authorization" which can take weeks! (Assuming it's even approved. The BCBS rep said it can be a long, confusing process that a lot of times ends denied) I'm going to call financial services tomorrow and talk to them. I'm just so stunned that they try and charge people these ridiculous prices! It just makes me sick to think about healthcare and costs. I know they need paid too but to mark things up that high is just crazy! Our little guy has done a complete turn around and is finally the happy baby we knew was in there since the formula. Plus, no more blood! So we will do anything we can to assure he gets the formula, even if it means eating minimally ourselves and each getting another job to afford it if insurance decides not to cover it. It's just so stressful

    For some reason it only posted the first part of my reply?? Anyways, we haven't had any bloody diapers since and his mood has changed so much! So smiley and happy now!! :) we have a ped GI appt coming up on Tuesday to re-evaluate why he was bleeding in the first place and a ped allergist appt in the beginning of February. The doctors and staff were wonderful, but they told me the can of formula was a sample in the hospital so I can't believe they are trying to charge so much for it now. If I would've known the cost I would have gone to the local CVS instead!

    Is it possible the charge is for Neocate he received in the hospital rather than the can they gave you to take home?

    That would make more sense and be more understandable but he didn't receive any while we were there. They were talking with us before we left about scheduling a GI appt and handed us the "sample" and said to start him on the formula immediately.

    Does the can actually say sample on it? Many healthcare facilities receive smaller sized cans from the formula companies to give out to patients, but they say directly on the can, "Sample. Not for Retail Sale". I do not believe the hospital can charge for that.

    But either way, still crazy for a can of formula.
