Infant multivitamin

my pedi said to start my breastfed 5 month old on a multivitamin. Has anyone else started this and have a brand to recommend? I have been researching for a week now with no luck. Everything I have found that is supposedly all natural w/o preservatives actually does contain preservatives. Has anyone else had any luck with this?

Re: Infant multivitamin

  • Do you still take pre-natals? As long as you take them and eat fairly healthy, I think the baby only needs vitamin d. We use these - Carlson D drops.

  • That's odd. As long as you take your prenatal and eat healthy, your baby shouldn't need a multi vitamin. Your baby does need vitamin D drops. We use Baby D drops. It's one drop a day on the nipple. Only ingredients are vitamin D and coconut palm oil.

Is the Dr concerned about your diet?

  • Our pedi told us to do Poly Vi Sol w/ iron while breastfeeding because there isn't enough iron that a baby needs in just breast milk alone
  • The baby has enough iron stores from before birth to get him through at least six months old, at which time you introduce solids that contain iron. BF doesn't have much iron, but the amount that is there is very well absorbed. A multivitamin isn't necessary...take prenatals and try to eat relatively healthy. We do supplement D.

We were told the same- especially as the child gets older, they aren't as able to get the iron from breast milk.

    We started Poly V Sol.
  • I should have also mentioned our baby was also a preemie so she didn't have enough iron built up at birth, hence another reason we do the iron fortified multivitamin
  • Hmm that is strange. No she is not concerned about my diet. I do still take prenatals and baby is growing great. She didn't mention iron just a multivitamin. I will look into the D drops thanks
