Baby will only drink 2 ounces from the bottle

Hi all, I know it's strange to come to the breastfeeding group for advice on taking a bottle but I figured someone would share my experience. My LO has been a picky eater from the start. Pulling on and off my breast. Only eating every 5 hours. I had issues with oversupply, forceful letdown, mastitis, clogs, milk blebs on both nipples, you name it. He also is easily distracted and needs to be nursed in a quiet room with no distractions, not so easy with a hyperactive 3 year old. I am ready to wean but my LO won't take more than 2 ounces from a bottle and I know he needs more. He sucks that bottle a few times and then wants nothing more to do with it. I have to keep guiding him back but he stops at 2 oz. any suggestions? he is now 7 months old. He also wakes 2 times a night to breastfeed which I don't mind. He is also a chunker even though he is a finicky eater, weighs 20 lbs.

  • What is in the bottle? BM or formula?

    **DS - 11/9/00**

    **DD2 - 4/30/13**

  • I've tried both, same result. Though slightly better with breastmilk
  • Since you are also having the problem with BM, mixing the formula & BM 50/50 probably won't help (or trying a different formula). Are you sure you have the right size nipples? For BF babies you always want the slowest flow, but since you are looking to wean anyway, maybe a faster flow nipple would be better. Babies that age are always easily distracted, so maybe the faster flow nipple would allow him to finish faster. GL!

  • I tried dr. Browns and tommee tipped with a level 2 nipple. He cannot hold a cup yet. :(
  • I just weaned my 7 month old and I noticed that if the bottle isn't warm enough, he will take a few sips and then push it away (whether it is BM or formula). He is used to nice, warm BM from the source so it makes sense. He also had 3 or 4 days of not great intake, but today he seems to be eating like a champ. I also recently changed him to level 3 Dr Browns. Good luck.
  • Thanks all will try the cup and the level 3 and let you know how it turns out.

You can use a soft spout sippy like a bottle and hold it for him. Or a straw cup.
ridiculous but I never even thought of doing it that way.
