Trouble TTC

Is anyone else taking a LOT of vitamin D3?

My RE is a big believer that higher vitamin D levels relate to higher fertility. During all our testing, my vitamin D was the only thing that wasn't fine. It was 15 and normal is 30-100 so my RE told me to take 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 supplements a day. I tried taking the capsules split up so it would absorb better, but it makes me feel nauseous and terrible so I take two caps and my prenatals before bed. I am taking 2600% of the daily recommended value of D. After 5 weeks, my levels are only up to 45. Clearly my body needs the supplements to get into the normal range. In the last two weeks, I've started having a loss of appetite, stomach cramping and diarrhea regularly, pretty much daily. All of these are side effects of excess vitamin D, but they could be related to my metformin also but I've been taking the metformin (my current pill and dosage) for several weeks longer than the D and had no issues. Does anyone else take a lot of D? If so do you have issues? I don't want to go off it if my body needs it, but not being able to eat and having diarrhea all the time is not ideal either. Thank you!

  • I've been taking 1,000 for a while. But I've never taking any more than that. I don't have any symptoms for it.

  • Wow 10,000 daily seems like a lot. My husband was low on on Vit D and his doc prescribed him 10,000 to take once a week for 2 months and then 1000 daily for maintenance. I've been low on D3 in the past too and was only told to take 1000 daily and am now in the normal range.
Me: 37 DH: 37, married since Sept. 2013. "actively" TTC for a total of 13 months (after 7 months of TTC, took a 1 1/2 year hiatus due to work scheduling and wedding planning. Started up again after our wedding in Sept.) First evaluation by an RE November 2013

    HSG-normal
OH-tiny polyp found, but RE assured me she doesn't think it's contributing to infertility and doesn't recommend me to remove it because it's so small.
    DH's SA-normal
    Hormones all within normal levels
Ovarian Reserve-RE says "is great" she's not concerned about my egg quantity (which I was until I saw her and results came back good!)

04/2012 50mg Clomid=BFN (prescribed by OBGYN, not monitored)
06/2012 50mg Clomid=BFN (prescribed by OBGYN, not monitored)
11/2013 100mg Clomid, with HCG trigger=BFN (prescribed by RE, monitored with US (2 dominant follicles) and baseline bloodwork done)
01/2014 100mg Clomid, with HCG trigger-(prescribed by RE, monitored with US-1 dominant follicle)=BFN
06/2014 7.5mg Letrozole, HCG trigger (prescribed by RE, monitored with US-2 dominant follicles), IUI #1 on 7/3/14=BFN
07/2014 7.5mg Letrozole, benched for IUI#2 this cycle, because I ovulated on my own before my follicular US. Progesterone suppositories=BFN Diagnosed with PCOS this month too. Testosterone levels high at 76. =(
08/2014 7.5mg Letrozole, HCG trigger with 19mm follicle. IUI#2 on 8/31 cancelled last minute due to family emergency.
09/2014 Taking a 3 month break starting this month. If not pregnant in 3 months, will start up again with medicated cycles and IUIs. Had all my labs and AFC re-evaluated this month also. RE says nothing much has changed since my eval last November, okay for me to take a little break. =)

  • I have seriously low vit D so my regular endo put me on 50,000 once a week and 2,000 a day. I never got any side effects from it. Im off the 50k a week now and just doing 2k a day plus the pre-natals. I honestly think it could be the metformin, ive been on that for years and in the first couple of months of that i had horrible stomach side effects.
    Me: 40

Going through IUI with Donor Sperm

  • I also had a low vitamin D and was recently started on 2000iu. That high of a dosage for that long seems like a lot, especially since you're now in the normal range. I wonder if you could ask to lower to more of a maintenance dosage now that your within the normal range?
  • Thanks for all the feedback, ladies. I have been on this amount of D3 for about 7 weeks. I had the nausea issues with it from the beginning while taking it during the day, the other side effects are kind of new. I have been on metformin for over a year. My RE switched my dosage and pill at the beginning of November and I actually had waaaaay less side effects once he switched me to name brand Glumetza. I was more inclined to think it wasn't the metformin because it doesn't seem to matter what I eat, I still get sick. I ate some terrible things over the holidays and didn't get sick while recently I've eaten salad with grilled chicken and gotten super sick. Also, I had about 2 months with little to no side effects with the new pill. I think I'm going to cut my dosage in half for now and make a good effort to get some time in the sun daily (I live in Orlando) and hope things get better. I will definitely ask my RE when I go in for my u/s next week too. Thanks!
