Leg cramps!

I woke up with two gnarly Charlie Horses the night before last and am now feeling terrible cramps in my calves. I tried some holistic, doctor approved cream for leg cramps and have eaten bananas and hydrated a lot and they still hurt like hell. Anyone have any good ideas for how to alleviate leg cramp pain? I'm hearing they're normal in the 20 week time frame, but they are definitely not delightful :(

Re: Leg cramps!

  • This happened to me often during my first pregnancy...and they have been"threatening" this time...I also had terrible restless legs...I found eating a banana before bed helped...something to do with vitamin b, I believe. Also, the stock answer during pregnancy...drink plenty of water. Good luck, I know the feeling well.

  • I just experienced this the other night for the first time. It was so painful it woke me up from a dead sleep. I've heard massage and heat work well to get rid of the cramping.
  • I was getting them pretty bad for a couple nights in a row. I have tried increasing my water intake but I just can't seem to drink more. I started flexing my toes towards my head like @captainleela‌ said. This was a huge help for me!! I still get them at night but my body almost has the instinct to flex my toes forward. The cramp is gone so quick and I am back to sleep! Good luck!!

  • Thanks for the awesome ideas ladies! I just read online that taking magnesium before bed can help too. It's another banana and water for me tonight, but I'm going to try the magnesium and see if it works.

This may sound odd but this has helped me , pickle juice. I drink like a shot of juice and the pain goes away pretty quickly.
  • Prenatal Yoga. It works wonders.

  • Avocados! They have more potassium than even bananas. All the more reason to eat your body weight in guacamole. :)

  • I have heard bananas are great for preventing leg cramps.

@VeganOnTuesdays‌ but if this is true I may need to start stock piling up on avocados!!!!

  • Coconut water helps because of the electrolytes. I got a horrific leg cramp from soccer once and they made me flex my ankle back and forth a bunch and it completely went away.
  • Take 2 cal/mg/zinc combo vitalmins at night before bed, do this for the rest of pregnancy, it will help you sleep better too

  • Update on this- when I saw my doc she said that I could have an iron deficiency (who knew?!) causing the leg cramps and that I should add more iron and specifically meat into my meals. I've been super turned off by meat during my pregnancy, but I added some in and voila- not a leg cramp since. I'm still doing the other stuff everyone recommended too but it looks like maybe iron can help with leg cramps. It's a good excuse to go out for steak every so often too ;)
