Hello! Welcome to A15's first official VBAC check-in. VBACs are attainable but can be extra challenging -- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Let's get to know and support each other as we prepare for (or make a decision about) a trial of labor after cesarean.
How many weeks along are you?
How are you feeling about TOLAC? Whether you're on the fence, pumped, or anxious, let us know!
How are you preparing for the unique challenges of VBAC? Resources, books, exercises? If you haven't decided to TOLAC, what resources are you using to make your decision?
Are there any medical challenges that complicate your pursuit of VBAC ? How supportive is your provider?
Anything else?

I'm 90% pumped and 10% anxious that we could have a repeat placental abruption, either before or during labor. I'm delivering at a great hospital that can accommodate a crash section if needed, but the increased risk of PA on top of uterine rupture (even though both risks are minimal) sometimes spins me out a bit.

I've really JUST started to prepare mentally. When making my decision, I read a lot of ACOG and NIH position papers, talked to my OB, and talked to other moms I know about their decisions and experiences with VBACs vs repeat sections. I plan to start the Hypnobabies home study course at about 28 weeks.

Previous placental abruption, as noted, slightly increases my risk of complications. My OB has stated that I'll be watched closely during labor, but overall she's incredibly supportive and encouraging -- particularly because she had 2 successful VBACs herself.

How are you feeling about TOLAC? Whether you're on the fence, pumped, or anxious, let us know! On the fence and pumped at the same time.

I know very little so far, only what I've seen you ladies posting over the past few weeks. I'm going to bring it up with my OB next week, we've only grazed the topic of delivery.
Are there any medical challenges that complicate your pursuit of VBAC ? How supportive is your provider? I'm not sure how supportive my OB is yet, but from the little we've talked about it I have a feeling he'll be hesitantly supportive. My first c/s was because baby's heart rate kept dropping and I know my OB is focused more on whether this baby might repeat his brother's health problems (or come up with some of his own) than anything. So his preference is an atmosphere he can completely control...which means scheduled c/s. We shall see what he says on Tuesday!
As long as I come home with a happy, healthy baby I'll be thrilled either way. I just know I'll regret it if I don't at least try for a VBAC.
How are you feeling about TOLAC? Whether you're on the fence, pumped, or anxious, let us know! I am anxious about my TOLAC....I remeber how much longer it was to recover from my csection and how much pain I was in
How are you preparing for the unique challenges of VBAC? Resources, books, exercises? If you haven't decided to TOLAC, what resources are you using to make your decision? I was sitting on a yoga ball for a while which my doctor said would help but now that I'm bigger my back hurts too much. I haven't done anything else
Are there any medical challenges that complicate your pursuit of VBAC ? How supportive is your provider? There are no medical challenges since my c-section was 8 years ago with Twin B. My doctor is VERY supportive and is keeping me pumped for this VBAC.
Anything else? I am so ready to meet my baby girl. I am ready for her baby shower to come and go so I can get her room ready...we still have NOTHING for her yet
How are you feeling about TOLAC? This will be my second TOLA2C. I had a successful VBA2C's, Feb. 2013. Then, I was ecstatic! This time around, I'm surprisingly apprehensive. Partially thinking because I'm still 'iffy' about my current OB. My last OB retired earlier last year, so I had to do a forever, extensive search for someone who was willing to do a VBA2C.
How are you preparing for the unique challenges of VBAC? Resources, books, exercises? If you haven't decided to TOLAC, what resources are you using to make your decision? Just participating in my local ICAN and rereading all of the ACOG info.
Are there any medical challenges that complicate your pursuit of VBAC ? How supportive is your provider? My provider tells me she is supportive and she's had many successful VBA2C's, but I keep getting the vibe from her that she is just telling me what I want to hear, and when it comes down to it, she'll find a way to CS... I don't know...
Anything else? I am feeling really unprepared for this baby! I have SOOOO much to get done! Ack!!!

I am excited to try for a vaginal birth but scared about the risks involved and going through natural (meaning my body starts it, and goes through contractions etc) labor since I've never experienced it before.

I've read a lot of books and online resources

So far everything is a green light for a VBAC but I wont know until next Friday's visit if my uterine incision from my previous c section at another hospital was vertical or horizontal. If it is horizontal my midwife will let me deliver via VBAC, if it's vertical she is going to make me have a repeat cesarean.

Both anxious and pumped.

I've read a bit and asked around about the induction method they will use. Not sure how I should be preparing. A bit worried that I haven't done any preparing yet.

Like @saltbox40 , I am a Type 1 diabetic (for 30 years!!!). I am very strict with control - baby is measuring fine so far. I am not allowed to go past 39 weeks either - I have to be induced via a Foley bulb at that time. I will try to kick start things if I can before that time though. My son was born via emergency c-section as his heart rate was dropping with every contraction I was having - I was induced with him at 39 weeks and two days (I really pushed/pleaded for extra time). The induction did not really go well, but I felt good that I handled the contractions well.
I will have to have a c-section if baby ends up measuring too big (10 lbs is the cut-off point for me - they will make me have a CS). My son was 8lbs 6oz. Hopefully this baby will be under or around the same size (my husband and his brothers were all over 9lbs so that does not help!).
There were a lot of scare tactics used with my last pregnancy - I was told my baby was over 9lbs and that the baby's stomach was big which gave an increased risk of shoulder dystocia. While being induced, I kept being asked if I was sure I did not want a CS. And nurses were checking on me so frequently. My doula helped shoo them away, but it was annoying. I was able to ignore most of these scare tactics last time and hope to be able to again!
My OB is not all that supportive of a VBAC. He said my chances of having a successful one are pretty good, but he continues to ask me if I am sure about my choice and reminds me that the decision will be based on baby's size more so than anything else. He talked a lot about uterine rupture - but then told me the risk was small...

Thankful there is a group started and I am hoping to learn more about how I should be preparing.

I have no idea my OB said we would discuss my options at 28 weeks so I have to wait until my next appointment.

I'm not even sure what the challenges are, now I just feel stupid for not researching it sooner. I'm really glad you posted these questions.

So far no issues. My LO seems to be in perfect health. I've always been a little overweight, I'm not sure how that might affect my odds of success.

Thanks for this post. Realizing I should look into the possible problems before my next appointment. I usually avoid the Internet for stuff like that b/c I don't want to freak myself out. But I need to know what to ask next time. Thanks for opening my eyes for me!
