Cleaning Toys

Looking for easy ways to disinfect toys. Also in a safe way. Thanks

How do you clean and disinfect toys?

A certain type of wipes, sprays, hand wash?

Re: Cleaning Toys

  • Babyganics makes a toy cleaner that comes in a spray bottle.

  • Most of the cloth toys I wash in the washing machine!
  • I've thrown cloth stuff in the wash. I guess I'm struggling with the battery ones.

  • I actually don't disinfect either. Plastic toys I wipe if he gets them yucky. I do wash the cloth ones because he is a spitter.

DS is just getting over a cold so I've disinfected his toys several times over the past couple of weeks. I use a home made "Lysol" spray. There are lots of recipes out there but most contain a combination of alcohol or hydrogen peroxide and essential oils. When I worked in a daycare they used a spray that was basically watered down hydrogen peroxide but I prefer something without water because I use it on his cardboard books and I've seen many ruined by over spraying with a "wet" disinfectant.

ETA: and I agree that soft toys can go in the wash!

When I don't let the dogs just lick them off?

In all seriousness I don't disinfect. I'll rinse things off if needed. If visibly dirty I'll wash with some dish soap or wipe down with a damp wash cloth. Unless your kid has immune system issues I wouldn't worry.

This. I have a relative who studies bacteria and she says it's actually good to let your kid eat Cheerios off the floor and that all the germ exposure actually builds a healthier immune system and helps prevent allergies. I can't imagine taking it quite that far, but I try not to worry about disinfecting things or washing toys just because they hit the floor.
This. My mom told me about this kid that uses to live across the street from me. Apparently his mom had OCD or/and germphobia. As a result, his immune system was weak and he got sick often.

  • I just want to clean the toys that I can see are getting dirty. I'm not looking to sanitize all the time. Thanks for all the suggestions!

  • In DS's almost 3 years of life, I don't think I have ever washed any of his toys. Even now, I'll pull out his baby toys for DD. The only thing I did wash was the exersaucer. That's because the seat looked nasty. Otherwise, eh, it builds their immune system is my philosophy.

Also, I was totally guilty of letting DS eat Cheerios off the floor when he was little. It was always at our house. We don't have pets, and I knew the floor was relatively clean. They get to an age where they start moving that they get fast and eat stuff off the floor before you even realize it.

  • Dishwash plastics and pacifiers.
Washing machine for cloth toys :)
  • I use the washing machine for cloth toys, the dish washer for regular plastic toys, and a homemade vinegar solution for toys with electronic features.
  • For plastic toys either wash them with Babyganics or Mrs. Meyers and air dry or throw them in the dishwasher on the sanitize setting

For fabric I just throw them in the washing machine. We use Mrs Meyers baby

My nanny asked me this the other day and I was like Disinfect toys? Lol. Her previous boss made her boil them twice per week

  • We use vinegar like @MrsDeo‌.
  • I haven't washed/cleaned any yet. Even the ones he drools on quite a bit. I'm sure he touches and licks way worse things at daycare.
  • The washing will never end will it?

    Truth.
