Breastfeeding

Intro and question

Hello,
I am a FTM of a little girl who is a little over five weeks old. We have been EBF and things have been going well so far. I had some minor latch issues in the beginning and as a result have been working with a lactation consultant on and off whenever things arise. She has been eating well and gaining well (around the typical 1 oz a day) but in the past week or so I have noticed that as the day goes on her poop gets more green. The first few diapers of the day are the normal brownish yellow but in the evening they become fairly bright green and today I noticed one was pretty stringy. I know that this can be a sign of a foremilk / hindmilk imbalance but when I mentioned it to the LC she did not seem very concerned as long as not all the diapers were green and she didn't seem to be fussier than normal. She has seemed more gassy lately and strains and grunts when going poop but I also read that this is normal around this age. I guess what I am asking is if this something people have dealt with and if I should be concerned. My left breast is the super producer so I am wondering if she nurses on this side but never gets to the hindmilk since this breast is always pretty full. Thanks!

Re: Intro and question

  • Green poop can be completely normal, but along with mucous in the poop, increased gassiness, etc. it can be a sign of a food sensitivity (usually milk). You may want to start tracking what you are eating, and try to look for patterns when LO has symptoms. As long as LO is gaining weight you don't need to worry.
