edited January 2015 in October 2014 Moms
If your lo was in the hospital, would you leave them alone in their hospital room to go eat or relax?

  • The nurses here act like I'm crazy for not leaving lo in his room alone in his little hospital crib and leave the hospital wing to go eat or just hang out and relax somewhere on the hospital campus.
  • Sorry you are having to go through this right now!
Its really hard to say I am torn, I think part of me wouldn't want to leave, but then there is that part that says you also need to eat and be somewhat rested so that you can be there for your LO.

I think it is perfectly acceptable to go get some food/rest especially if another family member can be there with LO while you are away for a little bit.

  • I voted no, but we were only in there twice for about 5-7 hours each. I didn't leave him even though I almost peed my pants. If it were a longer amount of time, I think I'd have to leave and take breaks. I'd want someone else in there with him though.
  • I had to leave LO when he got re admitted for high bilirubin levels the week after he was born. But he was on the NICU and there was one nurse for every 2-3 babies and it was pretty much a big room with curtains dividing each baby. I knew as long as all the babies weren't freaking out, he would get attention almost immediately.
But if they were in seperate rooms and now that they're so much more alert I don't think I want to leave him alone.

  • Nope. At 2 weeks old DS was hospitalized for pyloric stenosis and required surgery. The first night DH had to leave to go home and take care of our dogs but came back the next morning. We both stayed with him the entire time. I left once to go to the cafe to buy meal tickets for DH and we got room service the rest of the time.

Also there was only one "bed" and and uncomfortable chair. DH and I both stayed the second night. I was not leaving and I didn't want DH to leave either.
  • No experience, but I just wanted to offer hugs and FX for a quick recovery and LO home soon.

  • If a family member was with her, I would leave for brief periods of time to eat and such.  Also, I think the reason why she would be in the hospital and where in the hospital stay would play a part in my decision as well.

  • First I'm going to say I'm a total spaz mom. I don't like her being out of my sight. I "think" I would go get something to eat. But sick baby, make spaz mom more of a spaz! Also that hospital you're in, it seems like you feel they're less "attentive". I don't blame you one bit. Watch on momma! I wish I could come bring you a meal or something I feel so bad.

  • DD1 was in the hospital 3 days for jaundice a week after she was born. My H was able to be with me so we never left her alone.

I know you ssid your hospital wont give you meals but for us we were able to go to the cafe and buy vouchers that were good for anything on the hospital room service menu. Do they offer anything like that?

Im sorry it has been so rough for you.
  • No experience but you need to take care of yourself too so that when he is out you are able to care for him.  Make sure that you are getting food and getting some shut-eye (easy for me to say).  Big hugs and I hope that this is not your dilemma  for too much longer.
  • I would't unless DH, my parents, or DHs parents were with him.

No, they don't offer that at our hospital. Typically they bring meals but it's only for the patient.
  • No. I would if it were a locked unit and someone was staying with LO while I was gone but otherwise no way. Too little.

  • DS1 had an emergency appendectomy at age 6, I didn't leave him during his hospital stay. I can't imagine not being there for any of my children.

  • Being a hospital nurse i wouldn't recommend leaving anyone who cannot get in touch with staff in the event they need something or are in distress. I hate seeing my elderly patients who can't work a call light need something and I didn't know it for an extended period of time. I'd feel worse for a child.

So do you provide child care so that both parents can visit a child? Or at least diapers?

I was alone in the hospital overnight with dd1. I had dd2 with (on) me. But I wasn't allowed to use the bathroom in dd1s room. The nearest one I could use was at the long end of a really long hall. Was I really supposed to pee my pants or on the floor rather than leaving my child for 5-10 minutes? You really think that makes me a bad mom???

    Wtf.

Sometimes two people can't be there. Sometimes mom or dad will have to pee or eat or sleep. That doesn't mean they don't care about their child. Ffs.
I think it is ridiculous you couldn't use the bathroom in her room.
