Rib discomfort?

25.4 & I'm having a slight discomfort in my ribs. Like a nickel sized spot its really on the upper part of my bump but underneath my ribs. Weird description but nevertheless the best way I can describe. It helps alleviate the feeling if I press on the spot .. Can this be attributed to round ligament pain? Orrrrr what? Which by the way I can't say I've ever experienced.. & Baby's really low so I don't think it's her .. I have a dr's appt on Tuesday I'll bring it up if the feeling persists.. But just asking around for opinions on what this may be.

Re: Rib discomfort?

  • I have no clue what it may be. :/ sorry! But try a warm bath and a hot tea. You can never go wrong with a warm bath and hot tea :)

  • I just saw mention of this in a pregnancy book. It's relaxin at work, most likely. There's a formal name for it (slips my mind now), and your doctor will likely have suggestions/ideas. They basically said that it will go away at delivery. :-(
  • I'm in the same boat and we have the same due date. It hurts like hell. Really bummed to see the responses that it doesn't go away until birth. :(
  • I've had something similar but more painful (I think) then what you are discribing, for a long time. It started when I was about 14-15. Many doctor trips later it was decided that it was most likely a nerve that grew into a muscle and was being pinched. I go long spurts without the pain now, but it does get more regular again with pregnancy. Maybe it's something like that?
  • I just started to get this rib pain in the last 2 weeks. I had this with my first pregnancy as well, and actually felt worse in the third trimester. I always described the pain as it seemed the baby's foot was stuck in my rib!
  • I've had rib agony D: (and I'm good with pain, I swear! Haha)
It feels like baby is trying to push her feet between my ribs, nightmare ^^ I'm 28+1
  • I have the same thing. What you described sounds like how I would describe mine to a t. My doctor said it was more than likely the muscles between my ribs getting squished.
  • I've had terrible rib pain since about 18 weeks (I'm 27 wks now). It hurts in my front ribs but got agonizing at points in my back lower ribs (mostly on the right side). It got so bad I couldn't sit, stand or lay down without terrible pain. I looked it up and found a suggestion to put a memory foam pillow across where you lay on your ribs at night (so lower than your normal pillow). It worked!!!! I now can sleep comfortably and finally find relief. It works best if you lay on your back with another pillow under your butt on one side so that your belly is laying to one side and you're not flat on your back.
Even if it's only your front ribs that hurt I find the extra pillow causes you to flex backward slightly causing you to be able to safely stretch out your front ribs and after a couple minutes the pain subsides.
Hope this helps for any of you suffering, I know it's been a god-send for me!!!
  • I experienced this same pain yesterday on a 4 hour flight.  It was terrible!  I took my bra off because I assumed the tight band around my chest wasn't helping.  Thanks all the PPs for the suggestions.
  • If you look up rib subluxation in pregnancy, I believe this is the discomfort everyone is feeling - myself included. My doctor said it's a combination of relaxin & the organs getting pushed up further due to the uterus growing.
