I'm a first time mom and I've been trying to breastfeed my newborn son for almost three weeks now. Right now i'm making less progress than we were two weeks ago while still in the hospital. He displays strong natural insticts by rooting and grabbing for my breast, but every time I try to put him to my nipple he cries and fights. I've been researching everything I can from different positions to issues on nursing with large breasts and no matter what I do my baby still cries bloody murder. Is this normal learning process behavior or am I just not meant to breastfeed?
Re: breastfeeding troubles
I agree that you should make an appointment with a LC. In the meantime though, I think you should definitely keep trying. I have large breasts and had some trouble at first with positioning and my son latching on. He would latch on, and two seconds later push me away and cry. It was so frustrating but I kept doing it over and over (tried different positions, took lots of breaks) and eventually we both got better at it. He still has bouts of fussiness now and then and his pediatrician said that is normal.
Cluster feeding is also super stressful but luckily only lasts a few days. I also recommend a nursing pillow if you don't already have one, and to keep up your milk supply you should pump even if your LO won't nurse from the breast. When my supply was low I was told to try nursing, then pump 15 minutes later after each attempt. Since then my supply has been pretty consistent.
I second the LC recommendation. They can help you work on latching & check his mouth for tongue/lip ties.
Good luck!
