push gift?

So my SIL gave birth to their first child on 1/7/15 and BIL gave her a $1,700 diamond bracelet after delivery. She says it's her "push gift." Never heard of that before. Apparently you're supposed to be given expensive gifts for pushing a human through your vag or delivering one by C-section. Is it just me or is this completely ridiculous? And is this something new or has this always been around?

A push present is by no means a requirement, nor does it have to be expensive. I never mentioned a thing about push presents to my DH, but after I had DS he gave me a silver necklace with a heart shaped bead with tiny footprints on it. It was thoughtful and sweet, but wasn't crazy expensive or contrived.

I think it's a bit crazy to demand expensive gifts as a reward for having a baby, but that's just my opinion!

  • I am a Labor and Delivery nurse and I have been hearing about these "push presents" for a couple of years now. I would not say that it is a common thing to do. It's just a way for new moms to have an excuse to get a gift. It's not required and it dosent have to be expensive.
  • I first heard of this trent when I was pregnant with my first. I think it's ridiculous if the mom is expecting it, or demanding it (I have a few friends who literally demanded). But, if it's something meaningful that the dad has thought about and wants to do I think it's sweet. It should celebrate the new baby.

  • I just heard about this about 2 weeks ago when my friend said she was finally going to use her "push gift." Her husband had given her a gift certificate to get a massage and mani/pedi. Although I will not be demanding one from my husband, I think a spa day after delivery would be great!
  • I actually was telling my mom about this when the other thread was going. She said that she got something when I was born and when my brother was born from my dad. That was 30 and 28 yrs ago. She said it was just something that you did. They never had a name for it. But I guess, at least in this area, it has pretty much been expected that mom receive some token. He alway just got her some little piece of jewelry. Nothing extravagant, one was a ring that had a bow on it and I don't recall what the other was.

  • I agree. It's the name that bothers me. That is what makes it seem expectant.

  • There were so many opinions on the first thread, it went on for pages. I would check out that post.
  • My dad bought me Subway after I had my second, it was 11 at night so I'll consider it a push present since he had to hunt down a 24/7 Subway. Hahah.
But really I've never gotten a push present and I would never expect one. Although I am requesting an edible arrangements when I deliver this time. Lol.
  • I love edible arrangements. They're soooooo good. Especially the chocolate covered pineapple.

  • I wanted chick fila so bad after not eating all day.. probably will be the same thing this time.

I've been requesting an edible arrangements for years from DH...not for delivery, for just anything! I think his thought is always that I joking. But I want one!!!
  • I think the name bothers me too. Also I feel like we have so many gift giving events here in the US that just to have another one irks me.

There is not a Chic-fil-a where I live in New England... How messed up is that?! Now all I want are some delicious waffle fries... :((

I believe my commentary last time was "My present from DH is that he gave me the beautiful life inside me and his present is i spent the last 12 hours pushing out his kid."

The closest one to me is in a mall, an hour away... Too far and inconvenient for a late night craving :( I'm from the south, where Chic-fil-a is all around... They don't know what they are missing up here.

  • Chik-fil-A has hijacked this thread. Also what the hell were they thinking when they discontinued the carrot and raisin salad???

Now that's my type of push gift. Or the steak @ally3242‌ . Perhaps BF can rub my feet while I eat steak.... Is that expecting too much? Probably.

  • Like I said in the other thread.. To each their own. It's not a requirement. Saying it is a rich persons thing is BS IMO.

  • I had never heard of a "push present" before until my cousin had her child in October. She told her husband that she wanted a push present and the it was going to be a diamond necklace from Tiffeneys. When I got told this I was FLOORED!!! I thought how selfish are you?!? All I wanted was a happy healthy baby. So I'm happy I got my wish!

  •  They are popular here.  My main problem with them is I got one for my first birth, but not one for the second which DH might have thought out. Baby #2 is going to be a bit miffed about that one someday and I can't decide if getting something for 3 is a good idea or not.  I had wanted a small piece of jewelry with each child's birthstone to give to each when they get older.
  • Better not give birth on a Sunday if you want that Chick-Fil-A ;)

My dad gave my mom something after each of us was born (three kids)- for me, it was a gold watch because it was also their 10 year anniversary and I arrived after the very last round of IVF and 5+ years of trying to conceive (fun fact: I was the first IVF baby born in my home county.) They felt it was certainly a time to celebrate!
  • Not neccesary, but i'm not going to say no to presents!

This has definitely been covered in detail in another thread. I will say that I got a beautiful and unexpected push present for my first. This time, I'd just like a big ass steak and a nap after labor and delivery.

The hospital I deliver at has a "new parent dinner" after you deliver and it's steak and shrimp. It's usually not the best though.
