Breast Pumps...

So I was having a chat with my insurance company today (holy crap is having a baby expensive!)... but we happened to get a very nice and helpful person on customer service and she informed us that if my Dr. orders a breast pump, my insurance will cover 100% for a medical grade breast pump!  I found this to be exciting so I went online and took a look at how much breast pumps tend to cost.. and it seems like the really nice ones tend to run between 100-400$$$!!

So now I'm curious... has anyone ever had one ordered by the doctors?  and would it be as nice as say some of these ones at BabyiesRUs?  Or what is a favorite brand?  I still have some time before I start putting together a registry... but if I can get a really great one for free I'll take it! But if it's not as nice... I might get the free one and register for a nicer one (I guess to have an extra handy?)  Thoughts??

Re: Breast Pumps...

  • I got a Medela Pump in Style Advance with a prescription from my OB. I love it

  • What do you mean by "medical grade"? Do you mean "hospital grade"?
...maybe?  I'm not actually sure what the lady with my insurance company was referring to... so if hospital grade makes more sense then I'm sure that's probably it!

  • When I had my first Insurance didn't cover pumps. Since I am going to try BFing again and Insureance does cover them I got a second, so that if I am successful I can leave one at work/in the car so I am never stuck without one. I have the medela, but your company should be able to tell you the ones available to you, or if your doctor does prescribe one they will be able to tell you. I've found the medela is by far the most popular one among the mom's I know.

  • I doubt they mean hospital grade, but they most likely cover the standard breastpumps that most insurance policies are covering these days.  I don't even need a Rx, I just use one of the 5 suppliers Aetna works with, fill out a request online, they check the policy and mail it to me.

It seems standard options are the same as the popular choices purchased from BRU, etc. Medela Pump In Style (which I had with my first two and liked), the Ameda Purely yours, Freemie Freedom Deluxe and a Hygeia one. I think everyone I know uses a Medela. I would call back and ask the exact procedure to getting one. Then choose then register for supplies (or not, I never did, I felt more comfortable buying my own bags, bottles, etc).

I know with my insurance the Medela pump doesn't come with the bag or most of the supplies (four bottles, cooler, etc)  that it does in the store, Which I'm glad about because it will be easier to pack in a diaper bag/suitcase, etc. instead of hauling that stupid bag around. But just be sure you know what supplies come with it since the different brands come with different pieces.

  • My insurance company fully covered hand pumps and single electric pumps. I got a double electric (Medela Freestyle) and they covered $175 of it and we paid the rest. I did have to get a prescription for it and could only go to 2 lactation places to have it filled. I have BCBS, so if you have questions, just call back and ask them to clarify. Also, check with your OB - mine wouldn't write the prescription until after I had the baby.

  • My insurance covers 100% "double-electric" pumps (not quite hospital grade, but the best choice for working moms who plan to pump somewhat regularly).  I haven't gotten mine yet - our hospital lets you buy them there when you get discharged - but I have a bunch of friends who have had babies recently at the same hospital with the same insurance and they all really, really like the Medela Pump-in-Style.  Ameda is the other brand they give out, but everyone I know has chosen the Medela.
