Rental pump vs buying your own

I am pregnant with my first and due in April. It's been helpful to read posts here. I am trying to decide if it's better to rent a hospital grade pump or buy my own. I would like to know people's opinions based on cost and quality of the pump/ease of use. Thanks!

Re: Rental pump vs buying your own

  • You should check with your health insurance coverage, a pump should be covered.

  • I rented a Symphony for the first month, out of pocket expense, however I had a premie who spent 15 days in the NICU and had no pump at home to go to since my insurance would only ship out the pump after the baby was born. I would have had nothing to use early on without renting. I did prefer the more gentle suction of the rental early on. My insurance would only cover a purchase not a rental. It all depends on if you can have one from insurance before baby is born. There is no way I would have wanted to lug a symphony back and forth to work everyday for a year. My advice is to purchase a consumer grade for long term use and if you need to do a short term rental to start with if needed.
  • Thanks for the advice! My insurance company is telling me that a pump is an exclusion, but they're looking into it and getting back to me. I was really surprised by that since my insurance is very good and usually covers everything.

  • I may be wrong but I believe all insurance plans are required to provide a pump based on the Affordable Care Act. The type of pump will vary from one insurance plan to the next. So if your insurance company says "no" I would look into it because they're required to provide it.
  • All third party insurances have to cover it due to Affordable care. In some states, they aren't covered by Medicaid plans...depends on the state though.
