June 2015 Moms

Anyone still running? and Intro.

First off let me start with I'm 31, this is my third baby, and I'm 18w+3.

Just curious if any of you ladies were runners before pregnancy. How much did you run a week before as opposed to now? Are you feeling better running in the 2nd tri as opposed to the 1st? Has your pace decreased significantly?

I've noticed a huge difference in the past few weeks...through the first tri I was running ~30 miles a week and now I'm struggling to log 15 miles a weeks. I ran two halfs during the first tri without issue and my last planned half, during this pregnancy, is next weekend and I'm getting nervous about it.

  • I'm not a runner but we do a weekly active moms check in and have some runners there. Welcome!

Wecome, I was a much lighter runner than you before baby. First tri was too terrible for me to run, but I've started again in second. My pace is definitely a lot slower, and I'm not worried. It's a great feeling accomplishing ANY exercise these days ;). I envy you, keep it up!
  • I ran 5 days a week the 1st. I coached cross country so I kind of had to. I feel like it helped keep my energy up and kept away morning sickness. I was running about the same 25 to 30 and most at a sub 7 pace. But once I started packing on the lbs it got harder so running a lot less like 3 to 4 times and maybe only 4 miles at a time. I am a little further along( 19w 4 days) so I went through a freakout moment a few weeks ago.
I just figure that I will try to keep it up as long as I can and then once lo is out start getting back to my normal pace and mileage. My dh already said he would watch lo so I could run and do what I love.
  • Hi. Welcome. I'm 32 and this is also my third.

I'm a runner. I was and still am running about 5.5 miles 4 times a week. I was about to start marathon training when I found out I was pregnant, but decided not to.

What I've noticed is that I'm still ok with with 5.5 distance, but I'm slower. I run in the mornings so I'll probably have to cut the distance soon because I don't have time to go much slower. LOL. I'm trying to make it 2 more weeks on this routine, then cut half a mile and see how it goes.

I ran through 26 weeks with my first and 28 with my second but both times had to stop because of too many Braxton hicks contractions. So we'll see how long I make it this time.

  • I was a runner before, but my doctor wants me to keep my heart rate under 140. I can't seem to do that and actually run. Do you all keep an eye on heart rate, or just slow your pace to what feels comfortable? I really miss it!
  • My dr didn't give me heart rate restrictions this pregnancy . He told me I could continue running as long as I felt comfortable and stayed hydrated. With my second pregnancy he recommended I stay under 150bpm, not sure what has changed.

I guess I should just accept the fact that running will be more difficult from here on out;)

My goal is to run consistently until 30 weeks.

This makes me smile because that was my thought with my first pregnancy.  I ran every day up until I was induced and never had morning sickness or fatigue.  I figured they were related.  This pregnancy both hit hard and I'd lace up my shoes thinking it would help.  It didn't ;)

@ljagno Prepregnancy I was around around where you were.  Around 35m a week (3 on weekdays and 10 on Saturdays).   First trimester I had trouble getting out for my weekday runs, more because I run at lunch and work was busy, not pregnancy related.  But the weekend runs I had to cut down to 6 or 7 miles since I run with friends and my pace slowed significantly.  It took me the same time to run 6-7 while they were doing 10.  Not only has my pace been an issue, but oh my goodness the breathing first trimester was awful.  The breathing has gotten better this trimester- I don't feel like I'm struggling to breathe with every step.   I think you'll be fine with the half marathon.  I was tempted to do one at the end of the month.  Just realize you're going to be slower.

@hazeltrois - it sounds like your doctor is following really really outdated information.  The recommendation for heart rate under 140 has been thrown out since before 2011.  The ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynocology) which your doctor should be following, has said heart rate is not an appropriate measure.    These are the current guidelines for exercise during pregnancy:
    • After the first trimester of pregnancy, avoid doing any exercises on your back.
    • If it has been some time since you have exercised, start slowly. Begin with as little as 5 minutes of exercise a day and add 5 minutes each week until you can stay active for 30 minutes a day.
    • Avoid brisk exercise in hot, humid weather or when you have a fever.
    • Wear comfortable clothing that will help you to remain cool.
    • Wear a bra that fits well and gives lots of support to help protect your breasts.
    • Drink plenty of water to help keep you from overheating and dehydrating.
    • Make sure you consume the daily extra calories you need during pregnancy.

Yay for xc coaches! I coach at the local hs and next season will be coaching at the local state college!!

I'm a stm- first time around, I ran no problem until 6 months. (In best shape of my life, running low 20:00 5k.) This time I'm struggling at 19 weeks...I'm just doing what I can and looking forward to training again after this Lo is born!
  • I ran competitively up until about 6 months before becoming pregnant due to fertility treatments. For the past 10 years I was consistently running 60-75 miles a week. As soon as I started fertility treatments I dropped down to about 50 miles a week and now at 19 weeks I am running between 25-30 miles a week. Pace is much slower than before becoming pregnant and I can not keep up with the girls I coach on my high school cross country team or my close running friends. I just aim to get out the door 5 times a week and run for fun. I don't keep track of my pace anymore and I don't go any longer than 6 miles. My bladder has become the biggest challenge. When running I constantly feel like I have to pee.
  • I have been able to keep up running similar mileage to what I was doing pre-pregnancy, but pace has slowed significantly. I was around ~8:30/mi avg before, now more like 10-11/mi, but hey... I'm still moving, so I'm thankful!

I agree with others - the heartrate guidelines are outdated, just go by what you feel and don't push yourself too hard.

Welcome and hope you will participate in the Active Moms Check-In that we do about once a week (usually Mondays, I think).

Also, like @skottypowell, my bladder is the biggest limitation right now. I have to pee about every 20 minutes when I'm running!

  • Welcome! I'm a runner too, first pregnancy. I was averaging 30 miles a week pre-baby except during peak marathon/ultra training when I was closer to 50-60. I'm closer to 20-25 miles per week now and I'm much slower. I ran a marathon early in the first tri (slowly) but since then I've kept my long runs to under 2 hours on weekends with 2 or 3 60min weekday runs.

I've also switched to mostly trails, it just feels nicer and I don't focus on my pace as much. I think you could be fine during a half, just stay hydrated and accept that this won't be a pr ;) And if it doesn't feel good you can always stop. I've started running with my phone so I can bail out if necessary.

  • Welcome :-) another runner here! Like most my pace has decreased dramatically and I really struggled during the 1st tri. Doing much better now, but finding it easier for interval training rather than the long distance runs. Hoping to run as long as possible!
  • Hi! Earlier in my first trimester I ran my fastest half marathon and 5k. But, then I had bleeding between 6 weeks and 12 weeks. I was told not to run or really do anything to strenuous. Now I'm 16 weeks and cleared to exercise again buy my doctor wants me to do more low impact activities. So I am doing a cardio circuit 3 days a week and yoga a couple times. But, I miss running so much. At least it has been too cold and snowy to really enjoy running outside. Good luck!
