Suggest a great city for us to live in!

I live in an amazing small town right outside NYC. There are a lot of great things about where we live. But we are seriously thinking about moving out of the area. The winters are cold and snowy. DH is from the Caribbean and suffers all winter (I don't love it either). The NYc area is also SOOOO expensive. DH and I work our butts off and have long commutes and are seriously considering a change. We are very liberal democrats, DH is West Indian, I am Jewish, our kids are biracial and it is very important to us that we live in a diverse area. Sooooo, who has a great city to tell me about? Where should we go?

  • I am a teacher and DH is an electrician (but works in construction) so I feel like we can work anywhere

  • Yes. Having lived outside of The Dirty, I have to say you are correct.
  • If you like to be outdoors, then Colorado is for you! It is cold in the winter, but the summers are worth bearing the cold for a few months. We have tons of ski resorts, the rocky mountains, and a couple of lakes. We also have a ton of hot springs which feel amazing in the winter months. We have a hockey team, football team, baseball team, and a soccer team. We also have legal Weed!

  • You could check out the north bay area here in California. It's very liberal and depending on the actual city pretty diverse. I just wish the taxes weren't so hi here. They really need to do away with carb. They make our vehicles need special emmisions bs and tax our gas. They suck!

  • DC! We have so much fun stuff here. Cost of living is way better than SF, NYC and even Chicago (I think).
We have jobs. good schools and great museums. We also have 2 large airports. Fun restaurants and I hear that there might be politician sightings (way cooler then celebrity sightings which we have also).
  • I was also going to suggest Oregon. In a perfect world my husband would buy my step-Grandpa's farm and we would live there with cows and chickens and dogs and pretty green foliage all around in a moderate temperature.

That was off topic but Oregons got some liberals and moderate temperatures so those were my reasons.

  • Austin, duh
I've heard AWESOME things about Austin. I'm also freezing my ass in Northern NJ.
  • Well, National Geographic rated Madison, WI one of the top 10 happiest cities of the world. And that says something when we deal with the atrocious cold half the year. But if you can put up with the cold, it's a pretty awesome city. It's a liberal utopia surrounded by 2 lakes with great restaurants, things to do, recreation, you name it. It doesn't cost too much to live here either. $250,000 gets you a decent house.

  • I've heard from many who've tried it that, outside of retirement communities, Jews should avoid living in Florida.

I like my city but we have winter and, while we have lots of Jews (I can name 14 congregations off the top of my head) it's not a very diverse community.
  • If you don't want cold consider scottsdale/phx Az.. High was 73/ low 50 today. Can't beat the weather here all though summer is a bit toasty.
  • The big island in Hawaii. Seriously.

My Sil is from there and it's not as expensive as where you live now. And it's Gorgeous!!! Fresh fruit all the time. People are really nice. And lots of our door stuff to do.

It's the only place I've ever visited that I considered giving up my entire life/job and just move.

South Florida would fit the bill. I'd stay out of Dade and go to Broward county tho.

I miss the hell out of it. The weather is amazing.

Sounds like Northeast Dade is a perfect fit. Very diverse, and a big jewish community too! City atmosphere, too. Mostly apartments and townhomes.

  • Charleston COL is high for the pay levels, especially in education.
    Also not so diverse.

  • Maryland is nice. Very diverse. Close to the district. Depending on what county, you might want to do private school. We have a winter, but it's not horrendous. COL is dependent on area.
  • I would suggest where I live but we are cold as fuck for like 4 months of the year so that takes us out of the running, everything else about where I live is magical :)
  • I think Nebraska is similar to Texas except the cold.....Although my cousin who lives there texted me last night saying it was 37 degrees and she was freezing....Its 5 with real feel of -5 here, I told her to shut her mouth. I would be outside in leggings and a sweater right now in 37 degrees.

Doesn't it get hella cold in Maryland?

    My friend lives there.

The high today is 28. Maryland ranks as one of the 6th worst states regarding the housing market recovery. You will either have a shitastic commute or LCOL. Not both.

Same with DC and Northern VA.

    HI has an insane COL.

That article said DC and HI are bad for teachers so let's rule them out too for her.

Anyone keeping track with a map?
Yet, people keep suggesting it. I was seconding your comments.

If they are mapping, go ahead and mark off the places with cold winters, HCOL and bad pay.

It's very diverse in the DFW.

I have several family members who live in the DFW area and really seam to like it. I visited once and I liked it but I was like 12.

  • The pay for teachers in Texas is pretty good, especially considering the low cost of living compared to other areas. There are also a lot of new houses, businesses, etc being built, at least in the DFW area, that I would think a construction job wouldn't be to difficult to find. Also, it snows only once or twice a year, usually. Be prepared for super hot summers though. ;) Good luck!

  • @mcbenny are there only charter and private schools in new Orleans now? Feels like I read that somewhere.

  • San Diego perhaps?  I don't live there but it is one of my favorite cities and nice weather year round.

I live in Portland.  It's a great town, but a lot of people have moved here and hence there is a lot of competition for jobs.  A friend of mine with 20 years experience as a graphic designer is slinging pizza right now, for example.   It rains from November to May.  It's not really diverse in the "hip" parts of the city but on the fringes it is a little more so (my neighborhood is heavily Vietnamese, Chinese and Russian).

California pays teachers well. My SIL is in a private school environment and my BIL is in the public schools. Public schools pay much better and have a pension and get tenure after like 1-2 years.

Based on weather, you might prefer San Diego. It is probably one of the less diverse major cities in CA (SF, LA, Sac) but I have some friends who are middle eastern and grew up there and do not and have not mentioned feeling treated differently based on their race. San Diego metro area has lots of new home developments, specifically Carmel Valley with new schools and homes.

Based on interest in diversity, I would suggest the Bay Area, and frankly, the San Jose metro area. More of the diverse/affordable options are in the South Bay region which has San Jose as its hub, not San Francisco.  SF gets very foggy and cold and lots of the SoCal transplants get very upset with that fact.

There are some options in the Peninsula region as well-this is the area between the city of San Francisco and San Jose, but it is not quite as warm as some of the cities south of San Jose.

I would think that San Jose/Silicon Valley would offer you diverse population, jobs (lots of new money tech wanting to remodel homes, expanding schools) and proximity to a major city with a university, tech innovation and culture.

Yes, the COL is high, but salaries are higher too.

  • I would also suggest Atlanta. COL is pretty cheap for a large city. And diversity is pretty good for the southeast. Also weather.

LOL at Madison here. Ass fucking freezing and not diverse at all.
True that. But she was looking for liberal and LCOL too. The perfect liberal, LCOL, diverse, warm climate doesn't exist IMO. Every winter, MH and I talk about moving, but when it comes down to it, the winters are worth living here. We don't have any natural disasters or creepy, deadly bugs/creatures. The south isn't worth the debilitating heat in the summer along with the bible thumpers, bigotry, natural disasters and shitty schools. The southern heat in the summer is just as bad as the cold in the winter here. And it's only debilitatingly cold for 2-3 months of the year off and on. The west coast isn't worth the HCOL and natural disasters.

  • Portland, Oregon. Love, love, love that city. Very liberal and democraty. Diverse population. So many things to do. Moderate weather (snow is rare and winters are usually 30-50 degrees). Great public transportation. Very green and pretty.

    ----
I love the northwest but we had to leave Seattle because of how few black ppl there are. Portland is much worse if you care about having a decent-sized black population though West Indian doesn't necessarily mean black which is why I used the term if. The Research Triangle area in NC may be a good option for you.
This is sad to hear. I'm trying to sell SO on Washington but I want him to feel comfortable there.

I find Dallas and surrounding areas to be very diverse. DD's class is like the United Nations.

I also look for people of color to be in the mix.

Dallas/Houston are two other areas we've talked about. This makes me happy to hear.

I always liked Austin too. For my career, the money is working out of Dallas. I don't live in the city but in a suburb and no one bats an eye at us being an interracial couple.

It's isnt just black and white here. There's all kinds of people here. Not at all what we had before.

    @ShakeyJakey‌

That's what I want for SO and LO. SO is mixed and there aren't very many mixed people out age here. It's more common for kids now to be mixed but he had bad experiences growing up. I want LO to see all kinda of diversity, not just white and black and some in between.
