Desperate momma needs help!

My 8.5 month old is putting me at whits end. I don't know what to do. She has been throwing tantrums about everything and then makes herself throw up. It's worse when she's refusing to take a nap or go to bed, but right before that she would be falling asleep while drinking her bottle. She also will throw them randomly while she's eating her baby food. And then will proceed to throw up what she just ate. Also the past two nights she has thrown fits while in her car seat.

I've tried everything and nothing calms her but getting up and walking around. The moment you sit back down she is screaming and gaging.

We bedshare and everyone tells me to get her out of my bed and it will be better. But the fact that she doesn't self soothe I'm afraid all she will do is puke all over herself and just make the situation worse.

I need help, advise, real stories of how you solved your similar situation, or just someone to tell me they are going through the same thing.

  • A lot of that sounds like it could be reflux. I'd mention it to your pedi. My LO has it and she's the same in the car seat the pressure on her tummy sitting and movement make her sick so she's just not a fan. She would want to eat but would then throw herself back and get upset. She would then projectile spit up. She's a lot better now but she's on Zantac. Not sure if that's it or not but just sounds similar.

  • Is she throwing up due to being upset / crying? I only ask because the last couple days DS has been making himself throw up.... And by this I mean literally sticking his hand too far into his mouth causing him to throw up! He is cutting some new teeth and they are really bothering him. Then of course after he throws up he is hungry and gets angry. He has been through this before and luckily it only lasted a couple days. I also notice more fighting back during feedings, both bottle and solids, because of the mouth pain.

    Hope it passes soon!

  • No advice here but hope for both your sakes it is resolved quicky. I would call the dr and see what they say. The reflux makes sense but maybe teething and its really hurting? Good luck
  • We only feed baby food at night. This is happening at all different times of the day. It could be AR but she's already been diagnosed with mild AR early on. Could it take this drastic turn for the worse at this age? She still has not teeth and no sign of teeth. From what it seems like to me she is throwing up due to crying. She screams and screams then gags then throws up.

  • This is tough. Is she gagging because she is crying or is she crying because her stomach is upset. Obviously you can't really tell which one it is. I don't think they really throw tantrums yet at this age so I'm leaning towards something is bothering her. I'd check with the pedi, it doesn't sound like normal behavior to me, sounds like a sick baby.

  • That's no fun. Can you try a day or two without solids to see if that changes things? It maybe be food/GI related. DS cried for almost two weeks straight, every time we put him to bed and just about every other hour all through the night. We were feeding solids only at dinner. Turned out to be bloating and gas. Now he only gets solids for breakfast and lunch. Cries before napping, but better than the good times we had before.

  • I read something somewhere about baby food at night being heavy for some babies and they have a hard time with it at night (could be total BS). But we were doing the same thing you were with the solids only at night and my DD had a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep for about two hours after going down. She seemed very gassy. We could hear on the monitor her farting all night. Just to try out what I read this week we stopped food at night and had daycare do it and she has been much better at night. She goes right down and stays sleeping! I am not sure if it has anything to do with the food at night thing but I would say it's worth trying a different time for solids and if that doesn't work definitely call the doctor because it seems like something is bothering her!
  • First I would check with your pedi about the vomiting and crying. Could be reflux related to new food, teeth, an earache, etc. or even just related to developmental growth. FWIW DD had no signs of teeth other then being drooly and chewing on things and she popped her first four within three days of each other. Plus there are so many little bugs going around.

Do you babywear? I back carry DD in our carrier when she needs lots of comforting since I still have to chase after big sis or get stuff done. she is content or will falls asleep.

  • So sorry!  I am with what several of the others have said, I would start by checking with the pedi.  Maybe she has gotten bigger and needs to have the amount of her acid reflux meds adjusted for her size?

It's so hard when they can't tell you what's wrong!  Hope you find the solution soon!  ((Hugs))
