Contractions

This is going to make me seem like an annoying newb but whatever, I'll risk it.

With my first, I never had any real contractions during pregnancy that I can recall. Tons of BH, sure, but nothing painful, just the tight uncomfortable pressure of BH. This morning about 45 minutes ago I woke up with what I think are contractions, painful that wrapped around to my back. It feels like a combination of menstrual cramps and having a stitch in my side but lower. They've finally starting to dull but are still more painful than they are uncomfortable and the waves of pain aren't as frequent.. I tried getting up and walking around, drinking some water, laying down in a different position, but nothing has really helped diminish them completely.

I'm not one to freak out over things like this (I have a habit of convincing myself I'm just being overdramatic) and I'll wait it out for a while longer to see if it stops altogether before I call my doctor. I'm not looking for a diagnosis but I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience since I don't really know about real contractions. Google doesn't really yield much info for contractions at 26 weeks besides Braxton Hicks and these aren't like any BH I've experienced.

Re: Contractions

  • I think you should call your on call doctor. That's what they are there for. Hope you feel better soon!

Scary! Not me but my sister had contractions around 6 months with her second. She went to the hospital and they gave her fluids and the contractions stopped. She blamed it on having too much caffeine that day. Good Luck, I hope it's nothing serious.
  • This didn't happen to me but I would say drink more water, relax and start timing them. Once you know about how often they are coming call the Dr and tell them what's going on. I had a friend who went into premature labour 3 times with her second. She had to get a shot to stop it each time, thankfully her little guy arrived a few days after his due date. Don't mess around with this! Good luck!

  • This happened to me yesterday and I called my doc and had to go straight to L&D! They gave me a shot and some fluids monitored me until they stopped for 2 hours and sent me home. I need to drink more water... Please call your doc and keep us posted! Xo

Thanks ladies. They slowed and stopped and I was even able to fall back asleep. If it happens again I'll definitely call my doctor. I think I just needed some reassurance that this probably wasn't normal.

  • I had this happen yesterday. I was sent to L&D for monitoring. My were regular. About every 2 minutes or so and became painful. Turns out I was very dehydrated. Water Water Water girl! And call your doc. No pregnancy is the same. As PP mentioned I know friends that have started having contractions multiple times during pregnancy and had to have a shot to stop them. I would make the call. That's what they are there for.
  • I think all PP have it covered but just wanted to say keep us posted and give a call to your OB/Midwife just in case! Fx!

  • Hmm. You've received some good advice. I would drink a huge glass of water and take a warm bath. See if that helps and calms the contractions.

  • I was having BH contractions and called my doctor. She said to call back if they got stronger and if I had more than 5 in an hour.

Same thing happened to me almost 2 weeks ago. I agree, drink water! Mine was a combo of dehydration and constipation. :\"> It was really scary. And although I've been through labor before, it was so hard trying to compare the pain. I was so uncomfortable for 12 hours before I called the hospital. Fluids and Tylenol helped. However, I'd still give your OB a call... Better safe than sorry!!
  • I had some of this (or something similar to what you are describing) right after Christmas when I got a horrible stomach bug and was terribly dehydrated. I knew it was early contractions, most likely from stress and dehydration. Definitely different from BH, but I timed them and they weren't regular. After more rest and finally being able to keep fluids down, they started to go away. I would time them and if they don't go away, call the doctor.

Eta: I didn't read other responses, just the op.
  • How are you feeling, pickle sex?

The painful contractions stopped and I was able to fall back asleep. While I was making breakfast this morning I had tightness and pressure and some very dull cramping. I was able to sit down and get my feet up and it stopped shortly after. I have been drinking lots of water and staying off my feet for the majority of the day and haven't had any further issues since this morning. If they return and are painful I'll be calling my doctor for sure.
