Children's Books

I grew up in a children's book store and I actually prefer kids books to anything written for adults... so I want to know your favorite titles! What are you reading to your littles?

  • Sandra Boynton is my favorite! Her illustrations are bright and fun and the little stories are hilarious. "Are you a cow?" was DS1's favorite, and when he was about 18mo old, he would "read" it aloud to himself.

I also love Sheep in a Jeep, The Napping House, Go Dog Go, and all Little Critters and Berenstein Bears books. :)

  • We also just got a book for DS1 that is full of bright colors and patterns, and DS2 loves it too. It's called "Hooray for Fish!"

  • No Fighting, no biting
    Corduroy
    Little Bear
    Crictor the Boa Constrictor
  • Give me all the Dr Suess!!! I also love the velveteen rabbit. I second the little golden books. Now that DD and DS1 are getting older, I'm looking forward to reading them chapters from Harry Potter, the boxcar children, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys....it'll be so fun to reread these with them!!
  • I love the classics like pet the bunny and Goodnight moon. Also like the "little miss..." and "little mr..." series.

    Hungry Little Catapillar -Eric Carle
    Lama Lama series

  • DD1 loves books and has SO many. She loves any books with animals in it and if a sing was made into a book she likes those too, like 5 Little Ducks. She has a Minnie Mouse search and find book she loves. She also had a paper back Bible New Testament story book she looked at so often that she was literally destroying it. We bought her the whole Bible story book in the hardback version for Christmas and read it at bedtime.

Im going to start looking for the American girl books that I grew up on to start reading them to her in a couple years. Also the Little House books and Charlottes web. Im so excited that she seems to love books as much as I did.
  • For classics we love
    Chicka chicka no boom
    Brown bear brown bear
    Good night moon
    'Twas the night before Christmas

    We also love
    Snowmen at night
Good night good night construction site
    Little blue truck books
    Only one you

There are too many to list.
Are there any books that you can't stand? I absolutely cannot stand I love you forever. Give me the creeps! Someone bought it for DS and I seriously want to throw it out I don't even want to look at it.
  • I love reading say thing with a rhythm to Allison. Miss Spiders Tea Party is a favorite. Any Dr. Seuss is good too. I love any book that makes her smile and she engages with.

I sadly haven't started reading to Brooke yet.
    Lilypie - (JrNi)

    Lilypie - (y35Q)

  • We're not really reading to DS yet unless he's listening when we read to DD (who's almost 2).  We tend to lean toward the old school choices.  She loves Beatrix Potter books, particularly Squirrel Nutkin and Mrs Tiggy Winkle (but oddly not Jemima Puddleduck which I think is the best of the lot
). Other favorites include The Story of Ferdinand, Corduroy, Caps for Sale, and The Snowy Day

  • I LOVE reading, and I really want DS to love it too, so for his first Christmas all we asked for were diapers and books. We have been reading M is for Monkey, Dr. Seuss ABCs, There's a monster at the end of this book, Chicken Butt, Robots Robots Everywhere, and Goodnight Gorilla.

  • DS waivers between being into books and being indifferent, but MY favorites that we read him are:
    Giraffes Can't Dance
Pat the Bunny (a favorite of mine from childhood)
    All the Families
I Love My Family (bilingual-love it!)
We also asked for lots of books for Christmas just to diversify. We got tired of the same 6 (short and uninspired) stories. To mix it up I still read whatever I'm reading aloud: recipes, baby guide books, etc.
  • POUT POUT FISH!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to throw that out there. Looove him.
  • My NO day is a favorite around here.. does anyone do dolly partons imagination library? Is that just a local thing (google says no)? You sign your kid up and they get a book a month until they turn five.. most of them are weird as hell, but there have been some really good ones too..

Pete the cat is popular around here lately, dr. Seuss, mooses loose tooth.. so many more

@RockyNFrankie‌ I am creeped out by Love You Forever, too. It's so weird and my MIL has given us several copies over the years since apparently it was my H's favorite when he was little. The mom creeping into the house is so blehhh. But I started to cut the book some slack when I learned that the author wrote it after his first two babies were stillborn. So so so sad. It made more sense to me after that.

  • I have a lot of favorites since I love to read and childrens lit was the emphasis of my M. Ed. I'm excited to find new favorites with A and to see what type of stories she is drawn to.

I noticed several PPs are looking forward to revisiting their old favorites with their kids. I am, too. The other night we were reading "Oh the thinks you can think" and I came across a line that made me remember reading that book to my little sister and I got choked up. That was neat. On the other hand, a lot of the books we grew up with rely on a lot of gender stereotypes and rarely show kids who defy them. I want to be watchful of that kind of thing when reading to my daughter.

Yea I tried to be ok with it when I heard that too but it literally makes my skin crawl!
  • DD got a Pride and Prejudice counting primer for Christmas. We've read it twice. She likes the pictures. She also got Goodnight Moon, Chicka Chicka boom boom, guess how much I love you, goodnight Mr. Darcy, and several others. I love reading and hope that dd will love it too.

I loved Jan Brett books and golden books and dr. Seuss as a little kid.
We are so excited to grow our family!
