Early Removal of Cerclage

To the moms-to-be with cerclages in place, have any of you ever had one removed before 37 weeks? I know that is typically when they will do it, between 37 and 38, but due to DD being super low and engaged, and the amount of contractions Ive been having, my doctor is removing the cerclage at 36 weeks and 3 days. Im not overly concerned about it, as I do not think it will put me into labor immediately, but was just curious if others have done this for the same reason, or others. If so, how many of you have indeed gone into labor a short time after the removal? TIA!

Re: Early Removal of Cerclage

  • Not me but one of the moms in Pregnant over 35 had it out at 34 weeks if I remember correctly. She just gave birth at 36.4 weeks just after Christmas.

  • Haven't had it out yet, but my doctor said she would remove it at 36 or 37 weeks, so it doesn't seem unreasonable. In other threads I've read, some have had the stitch removed at 36 weeks and then had to be induced at 41 weeks, so you never know!

  • No experience here, either -- but my MFM says they remove it at 37w in all cases, regardless. Since I probably won't be allowed to go that long, I believe they're just going to remove mine the same time they do the c-section (if not a day or two earlier).

  • My doctor has plans to take my stitch out at 36 weeks but maybe that's because I am having a scheduled c section at 37 weeks.
  • I just had mine removed today 36w1d. But I'm high risk with induction on March 6th. I think it depends on each woman's situation. Most of the time they try to take out at 37 but may go little earlier if your contracting so it doesn't tear or if being induced earlier to try and give your body a chance to go into labor on its own.

If you are comfortable with your doc don't panic and trust he or she is doing best for you and baby. Removal doesn't necessarily mean immediate labor but sometimes it's smarter to take precautions.
  • You are lucky if you got your cerclage remove at 36 weeks I wish the doctor I had would've remove my at the time maybe my daughter would've been here with me but unfortunately my baby stop breathing and now I'm pregnant again for but my husband doesn't want me to get the cerclage and now I'm almost 16 weeks and I am very happy but at the same time I get scared because I have 4 boys and 3 girls my kids are all grown and my sleeping angel but my husband doesn't have any kids and he gets very emotional when he sees other babies and it reminds him of our daughter ... Praying to God that everything is going to be ok so just waiting for my baby with open arms and real scare at the same time!!!
