Brrr!!! Bundling up baby in car seat?

It just got really cold!! How are you all keeping your baby warm when you go out?  I have been dressing him in a short-sleeve onsie and then a regualr outfit on top of it.  I have a Bundle Me in his carseat and have been putting a blanket over him and then zipping up the Bundle Me but I am worried he won't stay warm enough if he pushes the blanket down.  I have a warm jacket for him but I feel like it makes him super uncomfortable in his carseat.  (When he is outside of his carseat and running errands, the jacket is on.)  I just want to make sure he is warm enough.  Thank you!

  • That sounds like a lot. We use a bundleme and just dress DD in a warm sleeper at the most otherwise she gets overheated in the car.

The bundleme is supposedly unsafe fyi but then so are layers and jackets and its freezing outside so we use it anyway. We'll just use a blanket once we're out of these subzero temps.

  • No thick jackets in the car seat because they can compress in an accident and baby can be hurt or ejected because the straps are too loose.  The bundleme can cause the same thing.  I dress LO normally, add a cotton hoodie and a hat, then cover with a blanket.  We also have a shower-cap style car seat cover that zips over him.  He's always toasty warm!
Thank you guys!  I did not know that about jackets or Bundle Me's being unsafe.  I will order the safe kind right now...is the JJ Cole Car Seat Cover the one you are talking about?
  • I was just thinking about this today. APurp has a little fluffy jacket. I was going to put it on her today but didn't because I knew you weren't supposed to, but it's not like. A JACKET jacket I guess? Like, what is ok and what isn't?

It's fuzzy/furry. It's the one she's wearing in the attached photo, and I felt like it was too thick to wear, so she just had long sleeves and a blanket (and I heated the car up). But she also has a thinner fleecey one. I got it for this reason, but I couldn't decide if it was thin enough for the carseat.

This is the car seat cover we use.

If we are going out, I usually just bundle DD up in a warmer outfit (a fleece sleeper or jumper). If it is just running into a store I don't bother with a blanket in addition to the above car seat cover, because she gets warm easily.

The one thing I don't like about that car seat cover is the wind can blow it open at the top, so I usually hold it down with my other hand.

I have been tossing the idea around of adding a small piece of Velcro to it to keep it closed while outside.

  • I have a cover that has an elastic band that goes over the seat while she's in it. I can put her in, zip the cover, and you just see her little face peep out. It's fleece lined. Then I just unzip it when i put her in the car. So there's nothing in between her and the car seat or the straps to clarify. She hasn't complained at me yet so I think she's happy with it.

@SPurp13‌ the easy way to test is to put baby in the seat with the coat on tighten it and then take baby out without loosening the straps. Take off the coat and put baby back in. If the straps pass the pinch test then the coat is fine if they are too loose it is too thick.
Thanks! I'm going to give it a try.

  • @angeltennis3‌ that's the exact cover we have and I did add a small piece for when we're outside.

  • This is what we have too. sometimes the top part inches down and I clothesline her trying to get her out. How do you keep it from shifting down??

  • S has a variety of cardigans that he wears over his clothes, and then we put blankets on top of him after he is buckled in.  I also drape a thick blanket over the car seat when walking him to the car or when he's in the stroller outside.

Well...sometimes she looks like a contortionist when I get her out...sometimes I just take the cover off.
