  • -How old is your lo? 8 weeks today

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? Ummm... Not sure. As long as she wants? Is actually like to get pregnant again this summer though when LO is about 7 months old, so we'll have to take that in to consideration

-What are your short term goals? Figure out this pumping in preparation for going back to work (4 weeks from today)

-What are your long term goals? Become more comfortable with NIP... I'm so self conscious about it, even just at home when we have people over

-What is something you are proud of so far? Silly, but I found a nursing bra that actually fits, supports my now gigantic boobs, and is comfortable!

-Do you have any bm stored? About 20 oz

-What is something you are struggling with? Ugh! The bottle issue

    -How old is your lo?

    12 weeks tomorrow

-How long do you plan to breastfeed?

At least 6 months but I want to do a year.

-What are your short term goals?

    Get comfortable pumping at work.

-What are your long term goals?

Keep storing breast milk as much as possible.

-What is something you are proud of so far?

Will gains tons of weight and he's doing so well.  He loves to breastfeed :)

-Do you have any bm stored?

Tons.  I'm extremely fortunate and have a stand up freezer filled.

-What is something you are struggling with?

Will has decied he doesn't like my left side anymore.  So I have to position him crazy ways to get him to latch properly without coming off.  He's also now bouncing all over the place while feeding.  I think he's gonna take my nipple with him one of these times.  I can't tell if he's excited, super hungry, or what.

@aragosta I am totally impressed! How big a stand up freezer are we talking? That's amazing!

  • -How old is your lo? 8 weeks today

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? Probably a year

-What are your short term goals? Maintain supply now that I'm back at work.

-What are your long term goals? Ebf until 1 year

-What is something you are proud of so far? That I'm still doing it! The dairy elimination diet is a bitch.

-Do you have any bm stored? I have about 120 oz from before and during my dairy elimination that are no good to me now. Will be donating that to my hospital's nicu. I have about 30 oz that are probably dairy free, but trying not use unless I have to. I have maybe 10 oz that I'm sure are fine. Hoping I can keep pumping slightly more than he eats while I'm at work so I can get a bit more stashed.

-What is something you are struggling with? Pumping at work and just getting into a routine with it.

-What is something you are struggling with?

    -7 weeks and 4 days
    - Just taking it one day at a time. However, I think when teeth come in, that may freak me out.
-Getting to 3 months just EBF.
-Getting her to take a pumped bottle every once in a while, so I can leave her with my hubby or family if I have to go somewhere.
-I am very proud of myself for breastfeeding this far without any supplementing. With my first I supplemented right away because I wasn't as educated as I am this time around.
-I have about 60 oz that I stored from the first few weeks. I stopped because I wasn't using it (I'm a stay at home mom) and felt that 60 oz was good for emergency back up. Plus, I hate pumping!!!!
-Pumping!! Having 2 little ones now, I never have any free time to do it if I'm home alone. Plus, because I don't pump often and nurse frequently through out the day, I only get about 2-3 oz each pump session. I feel it isn't as beneficial to pump because it just frustrates me in the end.

Wow you have a lot of milk stored already!  Have you done the math on how much extra milk you need to make it from April til baby's first birthday?  It's a whoppingly huge number. 25 oz x 7 days is 175 oz a week.  a month is about 700 oz.  You are going to need a HUGE freezer!

Aside from that if you want to pump 6 months of milk in 3 ish months, you will need to store 50 oz a day in addition to nursing.  That's a LOT of milk and might be asking a bit too much of yourself.

I don't want you to set yourself up for heartbreak or drive yourself absolutely nuts with such a crazy pumping schedule.  Cut yourself some slack and don't live just to pump. k?

Thank you for the reality check! I will have to rethink this situation. I went through a bit of an emotional slump when I stopped BFing last year with DD1 and having a bigger stash than I did with her will help me not go through that again but you are right, I need to be realistic and manage my expectations. Thanks again (for all of your responses, they are soo helpful!!)

Have you considered switching from Reglan to Domperiodone? Reglan side effects tend to get worse with time, that's why most doctors won't prescribe it for longer than 10-14 days.

    @TC0514

Have you tried latching now that baby is older?  Sometimes with some experience trying ever once in a while they'll latch on, often close to around 3 mos of age for some reason, or at least past 6 weeks growth spurt.

I try at least once a week.. He literally acts like he's being murdered :( I keep trying though!
  • @shaddox16‌ don't feel guilty for not loving breastfeeding! We do a lot of things for LO that aren't necessarily fun, but are what's best.

How old is LO? 8 weeks

How long? Until I go back to work in June. He'll be 7 months old then.

    Short-term: keep on keeping on.

Long-term: try to get more pumped to store

Proud of: my supply! With Gabby, my supply was terrible. If H gave her a bottle and I pumped for that feeding, I would only get around 2 oz. Last night I got 4.5! Louie is also gaining so much more weight than Gabby did. She was in the 10th percentile, while Louie will likely be above the 50th when we take him in next week. H asked me last night as I was pumping what was so different this time, but I have no idea! Maybe they're primed from last time.

Storage: minimal--maybe 20 oz? That's just pumping off engorgement from the beginning. I'd like to get more, but it's hard to find time to pump.

Struggles: none except for finding time to pump.

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? 18mos or when he's done. Whichever comes first.

-What are your short term goals? Getting a freezer stash so I can get out without the baby every once and a great while.

-What are your long term goals?
Make it 18mos if I can.

-What is something you are proud of so far?
I'm proud of getting my supply up. I had a really low supply last time and was worried I would this time too.

-Do you have any bm stored?
I wish I did! My little guy eats everything I've got!

-What is something you are struggling with? Time, wish Levi was more efficient with eating and it didn't take a hour almost every time.

  • -How old is your lo? 7w today

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? 6 months on the boob

-What are your short term goals? Work on increasing my supply and pumping more. I pump and only get 1-2 oz

-What are your long term goals? Maintain my supply while working.

-What is something you are proud of so far? That I've been able to do this at all. BF'ing wasn't something I was interested in while pregnant until the last 4-6w. My milk didn't come in for almost two weeks because of the blood loss and transfusions during and after birth.

-Do you have any bm stored? About 30oz but I'm working on increasing that since she goes to daycare next week.

-What is something you are struggling with? Pumping. I get discouraged because I get so little when I pump.

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? Pumping and Formula
-What are your short term goals? To be able to pump for 3 months
-What are your long term goals? 6 months, but I'm producing so little that pumping at work hardly seems like it'll be worth the hassle.
-What is something you are proud of so far? That I am still pumping, even though my supply is so minimal that it hardly seems worth it.
-Do you have any bm stored? That's hilarious... No.
-What is something you are struggling with? I almost feel like it's not worth it to pump anymore. I pump all day, at least a half hour each time, and get a half of an ounce combined... It's so depressing and nothing seems to be helping thus far. I would almost rather just give up and spend the extra time with Pips since I go back to work in a month.

  • I filled in the blanks above but also would like to ask a question. It sounds like several others are also trying to freeze milk to extend the breastmilk LO gets once you stop breastfeeding. This is my goal. I'm wondering though, say I have 30 days of milk saved up when I stop, is it better for LO to give her 30 days straight, or to give her 60 days of half milk and half formula? I probably won't make it to six months so solid food won't really be an option.

@aragosta I've been struggling with DD whipping her head around while eating this past week out of nowhere too.  I keep saying one of these days she's going to take my nipple off.  I haven't come up with a solution yet since I don't know why she's doing it.

-How old is your lo?  4 weeks 4 days
-How long do you plan to breastfeed? hopefully 6 months
-What are your short term goals?  start building a supply for the freezer for when I go back to work, and keep working on decreasing pain with nursing.
-What are your long term goals?  Pretty much the same as my short term goals.
-What is something you are proud of so far?  Even though it still hurts every time she eats-and after, the discomfort has improved, and I'm still EBF.
-Do you have any bm stored?  In my dreams.
-What is something you are struggling with?  Painful feeding still and burning long after we've finished feeding.  I've worked with DD's pediatrician, who is certified in breastfeeding and is AWESOME.  We're making progress.
    ETA: words.

  • -How old is your lo? 10 weeks

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? At least 1 year

-What are your short term goals? Pump enough to not supplement while working. I had a decent start, but it got used while DH was in the hospital.

-What are your long term goals? I want to build up my freezer stash. With DD I had such a big freezer supply that after summer break I didn't have to pump at work.

-What is something you are proud of so far? My supply has been able to handle twins and I figured out how to tandem nurse them.

-Do you have any bm stored? I had around 40-50 oz., but it got used up while DH was in the hospital. I think I have around 9 oz now in the freezer, but probably around half of it will be used tomorrow, because I had something come up and wasn't able to pump my last session.

-What is something you are struggling with? Finding time to pump. It's getting better now that I'm working. Also getting a break where 1 is not on the boob.

  • -How old is your lo? 6 weeks, 4 days!

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? I'm committed to breastfeeding for a year, but we may go to 18 months if it is going smoothly and we're both willing.

-What are your short term goals? Get a better pumping schedule/routine. I started pumping in place of some MOTN feedings because LO often forgets how to latch properly at night (and I'm so tired that I sometimes just let her stay on with a poor latch). Maybe she's too sleepy? Also, I hate BFing her while she's swaddled (and we keep her swaddled for one of the feedings because she goes back to sleep so much faster). Its so awkward to hold her. So DH gives her a bottle but then I have to pump so I don't get extra sleep out of it.

-What are your long term goals? Build a freezer stash, get comfortable NIP. At first I was hesitant to pump because I had some oversupply and didn't want to exacerbate it.

-What is something you are proud of so far? My baby girl's chubby cheeks. She's gained weight very well, even when I struggled with mastitis and plugged ducts twice.

-Do you have any bm stored? Yep. I have about 35 oz in there.

-What is something you are struggling with? Nothing except for those MOTN feedings.

Im doing OK. I had been a vegetarian for 20 years. After 2 days of being vegan I was just starving and cranky and wanted something easy and nutritious. I ended up eating chicken. So no longer a vegetarian, for now anyway.

  • How old is LO? 8 weeks 1 day

How long do you plan to breastfeed? a year +/-

Short term goals? Pump more often. I'm on mat leave until next November so I don't need a stash, but I've been so lazy with pumping. I don't want LO to stop taking a bottle due to my laziness.

Long term goals? I guess just keep going! I have been very very lucky and haven't had the struggles that man others have had, so I just want to nurse as long as possible.

Something you're proud of? You mean along with keeping a tiny human alive with my boobs? I guess I'm pretty proud of NIP. I've had to nurse at a few restaurants and I survived and it wasn't so bad! Oh- and EBF without supplementation etc.

Do you have any BM stored? A tiny bit- probably about 12-16 oz

Any struggles? I'm just struggling with giving up any of my feedings to DH or anyone else. I love nursing and I'm being selfish and keeping LO all to myself. As I said above, I don't want him to forget how to take a bottle and so I want to pump more often and let other people give him a bottle. Plus DH enjoys it and would like to help.
  • -How old is your lo? 5w6d

-How long do you plan to breastfeed? 2-3 years (at least 2).

-What are your short term goals? Continue working on increasing supply. Likely order Dompridone here soon.

-What are your long term goals? Keep doing what I'm doing.

-What is something you are proud of so far? Hmm. We had a rough start due to the PPH leading to anemia and low supply. She dropped over a pound from birth weight, but she's doing well now. I may not be able to forgo supplementing completely, but I have noticed an increase in supply, so that's good. Despite the struggles, there was never a thought of quitting.

-Do you have any bm stored? Nope. She takes what I pump. I'm not pumping to build a stash this time.

-What is something you are struggling with? Continuing to work on building a full supply.

  • -How old is your lo?
They will be 11 weeks on Friday.

-How long do you plan to breastfeed?
As long as it works for all of us.

-What are your short term goals?
Figure out the best way to do this.  With the two of them, it isn't as easy as just alternating boobs.
Also to pump more.  I have been pretty lax about it.

-What are your long term goals?
    Just keep going.

-What is something you are proud of so far?
I'm crazy proud of it all.  I have kept two babies alive, and thriving, with my boobs, even after our rough start.
They were 7 lbs & 6 lbs, 15oz at birth.  Z lost over a lb, within the first 5 days, but was up to 11lbs11oz at her 2 month appointment. G was 12 lbs, 7 oz at the 2 month appointment.

-Do you have any bm stored?
I have some, and I left some at my parents house since they watch them sometimes. Not nearly as much as I would like, but that's because I've been too lazy.

-What is something you are struggling with?
As I mentioned, just trying to figure out boob assignments.  I tried switching with every feed, or switching every few hours, but the have such different eating styles, I felt like it was too complicated.  I tried switching every day, but again, they have different needs, and I feel like my boobs were always confused.  I'm considering just assigning each kid a boob & being done with the switching. I'm tired of always feeing so engorged.

I would do half and half to give her time to slowly adjust to the formula. Or start like 80/20, 60/40, 50/50 and then eventually go to only formula.

I would stretch it out as long as possible if you can.  a drop of breastmilk has like a million cells of antibodies that can help keep baby healthier thru cold and flu season and return to day are and the sharing of germs there.   and you want to go slowly enough to be sure you find the kind of formula that works best for baby before going 100% formula--like one of mine would never poop on enfamil, the other wouldn't poop on similac when used for supplementing, but they were both ok with a good start formula.
@AmyG* @jlk6 Many thanks for the input! That makes sense and that way maybe we can use the samples we have before they expire to decide what will work best. It will be a little more complicated than stopping cold turkey, but I definitely want to keep giving her antibodies as long as I can.

One more question...when calculating how much milk you'll need, what's everyone assuming per day? I've been assuming 25oz because I've seen that figure floating around, but I haven't done a full day on pumped bottles yet, and don't plan to as long as I'm EBF, so don't really know how much she takes. When we give her a 4oz bottle she lasts 4 hours, supporting the 25oz estimate. Thoughts?

  • I have a question about pumping at work. It may be a silly one. I am kind of intimidated by pumping.

For the last 2 days, I have only pumped twice in an 8 hour time frame. By the time it is time to pump again, it is time to clock out. Is it safe to pump more than 3 hours apart? Can this hurt my supply? Is there a set amount of time I should have between each session? I have a good supply so far. I get 6 oz total from both breasts at each session. I could stay late and pump but I live 10 min away from work. When I get home I nurse DS. I am just not sure if I am doing this pumping thing correctly.
