burning in breasts

A couple weeks ago I was diagnosed with mastitis. Ive been on meds for it and I thought it was gone. But the past couple days my breasts are kind of burning or I have like a twinging feeling. Not so much to the touch just as im sitting here. Its not happening as im nursing and baby ate about an hour ago so its not happening immediatley after nursing. Is this normal? Didnt experience this with dd1. Also, there is no outward sign of anything, no engorgement, no cracked or sore nipples, etc.

Re: burning in breasts

  • I would say its more my breasts although does happen on my nipples as well.

  • it does sound like thrush. one of the hallmarks of thrush is shooting pains in your breasts (not necessarily when you're nursing), but your nipples can get sore as well. and you also just took antibiotics, and it's quite common to get yeast infections afterwards.

depending on how bad your symptoms are, you can start treating it at home, but if it's worsening, i'd call your doctor.

    for treating at home-
-wash your laundry (particularly bras) with a cupful of vinegar in the load to kill yeast
-you can apply a diluted vinegar solution directly to your nipples before/after feedings, or use an over-the-counter antifungal cream (look for miconazole- you can often find it by itself in a tube generally as a jock itch treatment)
-take a bath with a cupful of vinegar added
-try to cut sugar out of your diet, and eat lots of probiotic/fermented foods (yogurt, etc.)
    -take a probiotic supplement
-check your LOs mouth for white patches- meaning yeast in the mouth. if that happens i'd call your pedi to get an oral solution for your LO and then you should probably get treated as well, otherwise you'll pass it back and forth.
