First stink issue

Good morning! I have encountered my first stink issue with diapers. I've read through old posts and tried a few things and it seems to be resolved, but the control freak in me wants to know WHY!? I use flats, prefolds and a few simplex with Charlies. I think our water is a little hard but nothing extreme. Everything smelled clean but as soon as LO would wet them they'd start to smell. I don't know how to describe it other than the smell after you eat asparagus...
I'm at my parents house this week so I'm using tide in their HE FL (Prewash, heavy wash, extra rinse) and now all is well. So I guess Tide solved the problem, but any guesses on what went wrong? Buildup of some kind? Did I need more Charlies in my wash, or a vinegar rinse? Any guesses would be so appreciated so I can avoid this in the future. Thanks!

I don't like guessing.

Can you find out how hard your water is? Usually it shouldn't be too different from what is reported in your local water authority's annual WQ report. Most water authorities will have this information available on their website.

What is your full wash routine, and how much Charlie's are you using? How many diapers per load, how frequently are you washing?

My guess is that today you probaby realized that you left your house completely naked, shrugged it off, and carried on anyway.

My other guess is that Charlie's isn't working for you, and you need a different detergent.

This is the first time I've gotten snark and I think I like it.

@TJ1979‌ I only leave home naked when it's below zero, so yes, that is exactly what happened. Then I sulked about the giant tub of Charlies sitting at home.

@Kelly11235‌ I thought this too then remembered I don't like asparagus.

@freezorburn‌ at home I have a regular top loader--EOD cold Prewash, hot wash with 2 scoops then a warm Prewash again to rinse. I can't seem to find water info but sounds like that should be my next step.

Oh thank goodness. Because I got in trouble for it last night. Apparently not everyone can handle a little silliness. I'm glad you can, you should stick around!

Depending on your water type, maybe Charlie's booster will help?

Try doing a warm pre-wash (use a different cycle if that's what you need to do) instead of cold. This time of year, sometimes cold water is too cold to be effective.

And yes you need to figure out if you are using the right amount of detergent for your water type/load size and whether Charlie's booster will help.

She asked if anyone had any guesses. I randomly guessed that she left her house naked, realized it, and didn't care and continued about her day naked. It was just a guess. She agreed that I was correct, then ITK found a pic of her online.

I would try adding Charlies booster probably. Since it's just an odd smell and not like an ammonia smell maybe it will go away and it's just something weird they ate or something.
