Fetal Echo

Hello,

Tomorrow morning I have a Fetal Echo appointment. They told me it's nothing to worry about, but I had to research on why you get them done and now I am freaking out. I would like some prayers if possible too because if it's right on what I read on why mom's to be have to have a Fetal Echo, I am worried something is wrong with her heart. Which, to me with her movement and such, I feel like she is fine. I should have never read on it, but I didn't know if I had to prepare for anything. Oh, I just hope tomorrow morning goes well. Also, I hope with the storm that is coming this way to Buffalo, NY that they don't cancel the appointment. I just want to get this done and over with to see what's going on. Has anyone else had this done to relieve some of my concerns?

Thank you for your time in reading this.

I had to have a fetal echo because little man was too wiggly during his first, and subsequent "redo" A/S. They couldn't get the pictures they needed in order to check that his heart was fine, so they ordered an echo. It's just a closer look at the heart- they did multiple little video clips for mine. It was all quite interesting. He's perfectly fine and healthy :) they just wanted to have a solid look at that heart! Try not to worry mama.
  • No experience but good luck tomorrow. Praying it goes well.

  • Prayers for you and the weather tomorrow so it can ease your mind to get it over with and get the results!
  • I had one done as well, and I agree it's strange to the OB didn't tell you why you're having it. It is a super detailed ultrasound and really cool. FX that everything is fine. My brother in law had a heart defect when he was born, had surgery and it perfectly fine and active at 37! Also my neighbor just had a baby last month and they learned after he was born that he has a hole in his heart. Prognosis for him is good too. Moral of the story is, even if they find a problem, although worrisome, it may not mean your LO won't have a normal life. Sending thoughts and prayers your way tomorrow!

  • FX that all is good. I had a fetal echo for my son because they couldn't see certain parts of the heart clearly on the AS. He is fine and a healthy 4 year old. It's usually just done as precaution. If they saw a major defect on the AS, I'm pretty sure they would tell you that is why you are getting a fetal echo.
  • No experience, but good luck today! Hope everything turns out to be fine!

  • We had a fetal echo as well. I think more and more people are getting them nowadays. It has become the new "standard of care" for most IVF babies (depending on physician). I went into mine a little worried as well but my DH assured me that it is better to see if there are any issues now so we deliver in a hospital equipped to care for us. Luckily baby looked good. Best of luck to you.
  • We had a fetal echo at 20 weeks because my husband had a heart defect that was operated on when he was young.  Just like everyone else has said, I think its strange that the doctor didn't tell you why they were doing it.  You might want to at least ask for insurance purposes to make sure that the insurance considers it medically necessary and will cover it.  Its kind of cool to see the blood moving through the heart, and luckily everything looked great on ours and the fetal cardiologist was very thorough in explaining what she was looking at and for.  Best of luck to you!
  • No advise, but praying everything is ok.
  • I had a fetal echo done because baby girl doesn't like being looked at and wouldn't let the regular techs take a good look at her heart. I have to go back again because there were a couple more shots that they didn't get but so far everything looks great.

My office reccomends having echos done to make sure everything is ok because my hospital doesn't have a NICU, and if something were wrong they wouldn't want to deliver me there.

Try not to stress too much. You could always call your doc and ask why he recommended having it done.
  • Sending prayers!

  • Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers. Unfortunately we couldn't go today because the weather did not allow us to. They had a lot of businesses closed and of course one of them was this office. So we are rescheduled for next Friday.

Sorry should have stated. My OB did say in November that they were going to have me do another sonogram because she was moving too much that they could not see well on how the heart is but her heartbeat was perfect. She was bouncing around too much and sucking her left thumb which blocked the heart. But in December I did not see her after the follow up sonogram. She was still, so Hubby and I are confused why they couldn't see her heart perfect enough. The High Risk Doc was behind on patients that day and they said they would call to let me know if I should make an appointment for an Fetal Echo. It was Christmas Eve, so patients were being rude and not patient about running behind in the office, so we didn't officially get to talk to a Doc after having the second one done. I was told by the sect. when they called me to give me the number for the peds cardiologist that they didn't get a good picture still, which I find odd since she was still and there should not have been problems. Just freaks me out. So I wanted to see why others have had them done and that's why I went on Google. I usually don't but for some reason I looked on the American Heart Assoc. site. I have a heart murmur but didn't have problems except being able to feel it as I became older. Was actually born with it.

  • I had a fetal echo done yesterday. I am an IVF pregnancy and that may be why since we dont have any of the other medical history. I did get the sense that its pretty standard where I live (India), maybe because ultrasounds are relatively inexpensive here. It was quick (maybe 10 minutes) that we did along with a standard growth scan. GL with your scan. It was very reassuring to me to know that the baby's heart is a-ok.
  • Haven't had this test done, but fellow Buffalonian and also had a questionable spot on our little girl's heart at her anatomy scan. They said they will just look for it again at our next scan. So I sympathize with you and hope you get some positive results back!! FX

I had the same kind of feelings. I thought "why on earth aren't they trying very hard?!" But then I found out that if the baby is sitting transverse (back out) then the techs won't get a super great image of the heart. Which makes sense since the heart sits in the front of the body, when his/her back is facing the transducer then the tech has to get an image through your abdomen, your uterus and through all of your baby to reach the heart.
