music play list for labor/delivery

Question:
I've never had music playing during labor or delivery. My water birth instructor told us it's a good idea to have some music download and ready to go just in case we wanted to use it. I've always had an epidural, so I watched TV, or slept. This time I'm hoping to go natural. I'm not sure what kind of music/songs would be better to have.

I'm curious what type of music you have on your play list?

Bonus points for: artists names, song names, and where is a good place online to use to download them. (Free)

I'm really at a loss to where to even start looking.

Re: music play list for labor/delivery

  • I don't have a playlist but I currently can't stop listening to Ed Sheeran radio on Spotify. It's very mellow (for the most part).
  • Loading the player...
  • Handel's Water Music?

Sorry, that is a bad joke.

I would say you have two ways to think about this. You could go with music that you find very relaxing. Enya or Yoyo ma if that is your thing. Or you could go with something that pumps you up. Workout music, stuff you rock out to while you are cleaning. That kind of thing.

Honestly, I might do a playlist with each, you never know how you are gonna feel.

But if you decide to rock out, add some Queen to your playlist for me.
  • Yeah, I'm thinking I want a mixture just in case.
    Queen will be added! :D

Well, if you like queen, try Grace Kelly by Mika.

As far as sources, I am assuming you will have WiFi access? Make a YouTube playlist?

I really like classical music if I'm sick of the radio or want to relax. I have a mix of Haydn, Debussy, Mozart etc on Spotify, which you can try free for a month BTW! I just searched relaxing classical music and started saving ones I liked to a playlist. I practice some breathing exercises to the music so hopefully if I play it at the hospital I'll be used to it calming me. Good luck with your mix!

  • I have been listening to Buddhist meditation and relaxation chants for awhile now on YouTube. There are quite a few playlists on there that are 3+ hours long. I know this probably isn't for everyone but it calms and centers me!

  • I did two playlists in case- I did some fast paced music to pump me up. And then I did slower/classical playlist in case I wanted something soothing and gentle.

I ended up trying both and turned all music off. MusicFanatic wanted no music and definitely wasn't in her fanatic zone. I needed quiet (which surprised me because of my love for it).

  • I've been listening to different songza playlists the last few days and writing down songs I like. Since it's more random, you find new stuff pretty fast. Hopefully DH will do the downloading for me. I also want to make two playlists, who knows what I'll want!
  • I'm planning on mostly listening to books on tape which I find relaxing but I already own.  I've been thinking lately of also making a playlist but haven't figured out what will be on it yet, but based on the recent comercials I'm thinking that Push It by Salt n Pepper might have to go on it.  ;))

  • I feel like I would want different music for labor versus pushing. Mellow music for dealing with contractions, but motivating music for pushing. Sorry no suggestions.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I didn't listen to music with any of mine (all med-free). I found that with early labour, I was either eating, or trying to sleep or watch TV. Near the end, just dealing with the contractions takes all of my focus, I could hardly pay attention to anything at all....
    DD#1 (6), DD#2 (4), DD#3 (0)
  • I've been listening to a lullaby channel on Pandora (sprung for membership free to avoid commercials) and it plays a good mix of classical music and classic songs (Etta James - at last, Rainbow Connection, etc). I've been thumbs upping and downing tracks as I sit at work which helps pandora figure out what you like and customize. Hopefully I've got a good channel built once labor starts! Only bummer is you only get to skip so many songs per hour.

  • When I was in active labor with DD1, I listened to my favorite Thievery Corporation songs on shuffle for like six hours. Le Monde and Sweet Tides are two of them; you can find their albums on Spotify. I think of them as downtempo with an international flare, and they always relax me. In the hospital for transition/pushing, I didn't listen to anything because I couldn't handle any additional stimulation-- I just needed to focus.

  • We played a Singer-Songwriter playlist off Spotify which was perfect for me. We hadn't got round to making our own playlist since our little miss was a month ahead of schedule, but it would have been better if I had, because I found that the songs I knew and liked were way more effective at taking my mind away from the pain than the ones I didn't know the words to.
  • DH has been tasked with putting together a playlist for me. He minored in Bluegrass in college and has a knack for making really great lists. We had even joked during our hospital tour about him bringing his banjo with him to our room *cue eye roll bc of typical East Tn hillbilly stereotype* lol. Don't worry he's not actually gonna do that but the nurses face was priceless when we asked.

I <3 the banjo! My grandparents used to play bluegrass with a large group of friends of theirs while I was growing up; my grandma was the banjo player. It's something I've always wanted to learn how to play, just never took the time to do so. And we're from SoCal, originally.

I've thought about what music I would want played, just in case. We both have Pandora on our phones, and I would probably just request Journey radio. "Don't Stop Believin" was the song H and I walked down the aisle to after being pronounced husband and wife.
