Short term disability - trigger - previous loss mentioned

I enrolled in short term disability this year so as long as I deliver after March 1, im golden. Due 4/22. I am high risk due to previous Demise (33 weeks 2/22/14, cord accident), gestational diabetes, and extreme stress from job (work with children/adolescents, behavioral and autistic-very aggressive). I plan on going out in feb prior to the one year anniversary of my daughters cord accident. Also, I'll be going twice a week for nst beginning at 32 weeks, have been taking monthly ultrasounds and belly checks. April can't come soon enough! What reasons to provide to short term disability to be approved?? Suggestions??

  • I kind of get what your asking, as I just had this conversation with my HR department. I may have to go on bedrest prior to my delivery date (4/22) and I didn't know how that played into my STD. It was explained to me that if my doctor says that I cannot work as it would be detrimental to the health of my child, I would receive STD up to 12 weeks and then when the baby was born, the 12 weeks would start over again. However, my insurance would have to approve bedrest and not just the doctor. I would talk to your HR dept about your situation. Also see if there are alternatives to taking full leave. I will begin working from home starting in March so I can better manage my medical issues.

  • The wording of your post is confusing. From what I understand, your Dr can write you out of work for medical reasons, but if your STD policy isn't going to begin until a certain date due to the company's waiting period, then I don't believe there is a way to get around that. Unless you had paid leave or accrued vacation time you can use, the time off between when you leave work and the beginning of your STD would be unpaid.

  • I don't know how your STD works, but mine will not pay anything on a birth that happens within 10 months of opting for the insurance. I don't know what will happen in the case of bed rest.

  • not trying to get more. i don't know if a doc has to write a note specifically stating WHY i am being put out of work.
I pay monthly to get the full amount through a provider not associated with my job. there is nothing "sketchy" about it.
I would prefer not to get hit, punched, kicked, choked, a chair thrown at me (which almost happened yesterday). as i said, i work in a very aggressive environment which is unsafe for me at this time.
  • If your effective date is March, then it's March. That's how it works.

  • sorry if i worded it incorrectly. They said as long as i do not deliver until march...then i will be covered, but prior to that, if the doc puts me out of work due to high stress, unsafe environment, gestational diabetes, previous demise, etc, i can collect. there is a 14 day waiting period tho. which i am prepared to lose hours, money, etc for that 2 week time period.
I am paying each month to have a 14 day waiting period instead of a 30 day waiting period.
short term disability--i can get up to 6 months. i'm not exactly sure how it would work tho or if anyone has gone through this.
Just want to know if doc needs to write WHY or for how long. if he/she can write "patient unable to work as of ------ due to high risk"
  • Are you sure you policy covers pregnancy? I sell supplemental insurance and in my state STD policies do not cover anything associated with pregnancy unless it is an emergency c section. Not saying yours doesn't but I would call the company and make sure. Also be sure you know their claim filing requirements. If it's too confusing you should call your agent and have them do it for you. They are the experts.
  • my job has horrible insurance, horrible paid leave, etc. they don't offer anything for maternity. i can get FMLA (family leave), but thats it. when i lost my daughter, i got 3 days bereavement and since it was unexpected, i went back to work after a week (financial reasoning--needed to pay the bills).
obviously, extremely anxious this pregnancy and work has me stressed due to the aggressive environment. i will talk to my HR about it and see what they say.
  • i can go out of work prior to march 1. there is just a 14 day waiting period.
i'm trying to wait as long as possible, but yesterday, i had a scare with one of my behavioral kids who isn't aggressive, and guess what? he was! almost hit me and my coworker with a chair/desk. anything can happen and i would prefer to stay out of those situations. normally, i wouldn't care, but since i had a previous loss at 33 weeks due to a cord accident, i don't want any risks with this pregnancy.
  • that is how mine is. i asked short term disability (thats where the march 1st comes in).
but i talked to them yesterday and they said the doc can write me out on bedrest prior if need be and its just a 14 day waiting period (as it would be when i deliver too...a 14 day waiting period for the disability to kick in).
i only got short term disability because my work doesn't offer anything and i only get 2 weeks paid (but it has to accrue so if i am out of work beginning of march until i come back from maternity leave, those months don't accrue and i may only have a week of paid leave). its also a "use it or lose it" policy at the end of the year.

  • I would call your agent. They will be able to tell you all of the ins and outs of your policy. They should also offer to file the claim for you. However if the benefits don't kick in until March, a claim will definitely be declined prior to that.
  • My job had set up meetings with this company but technically it's not through my company I can take it to a different job if I wanted to if I would ever leave my current job.
So I plan on talking to my doctors the HR department and the actual company that I have short-term disability through and hopefully they can provide me some answers as to what exactly they need from the doctor and the HR department in regards to everything.

I would call the customer service number on your STD policy. Explain the whole situation and ask what their requirements are so that you can make sure you have everything in order when the time comes.

  • I work in the insurance world and unless you can prove that you are disabled then they won't pay disability. They may pull medical records. You should talk with your agent and find out what they will cover. Due to your last pregnancy it is very likely that you could have a rider on it that says they will not cover certain things. That's is something you will have to look into though. Also you want to look at how long your doctor will write you out of work after you have the baby just because your insurance says they will cover 6 months doesn't mean that anytime you file a claim they will cover the full 6 months. Some company's will check on you periodically throughout the time you are on disability.

I hope that makes sense. Sorry if it sounds harsh.
  • @SharkFarts‌ @snegde‌ or OP - Can this post's title be updated to mention it's a loss trigger?

with the Short Term Disability policy I have through a company associated with a Gilbert Godfreid white duck... a physician and your employer have to fill out forms stating reason for absence. Best bet is to contact your agent directly.

  • It must depend on the policy, mine doesn't pay out until 7 days after your delivery date.
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

    Done.

    Thank you muchly!
  • I don't plan on being out 6 months. That's just how long short term disability can last if approved. I know I won't get approved for that.
