January 2013 Moms

Let's talk birthdays!

Sorry for the prolonged absense lately, with therapy 3 days a week now, and DH working about 60 hours a week, plus influenza group b, plus a blown ear drum, and a hyper extended knee,  i have been way over extended. So color me shocked when i realized that i don't even have two weeks to plan Thoren's birthday. Mom of the year, i know. Anyways, talk to me about what you've done or are doing because i'm lost. I ordered the cake this morning. A 2 layer chocolate with buttercream frosting, and raspberry filling, minion cake, plus a frostingless yellow oversized cup cake for Thoren with chocolate and white chocolate facial feature (he has major mess aversion). So minion is our theme. He loves them, he could watch those movies all day every day if i let him. But now, i need to figure out everything else. I was thinking of having the party at a place called perch and play, he loves it there, and it's make for kids his age, BUT he is the only kid his age. I WANT to take him to an aquarium, but the nearest one is 1.5 hours away which seems excessive to ask of family. Ideas?

Re: Let's talk birthdays!

  • We are playing it super low-key this year. Just having our parents and brothers/sisters with their fiances over to our house for pizza and salad. I ordered a cake from Krogers---it is Jake and Neverland Pirate theme. Well really it is a pirate theme and I bought some Jake characters from another store to put on top of it when we get it home.

We thought about inviting his little friends and stuff---but decided against it to save money. We will do something a little bigger for him next year when he is 3 and probably gets the whole birthday thing a little bit more.

  • Wow, you have had a lot going on.

We went simple, just a party with family (that being said there was still almost 30 people). We just had it at our house, easy appetizers, H smoked a few pork butts to make pulled pork sandwiches, made some easy coleslaw and bought chips. I did spend about $25 at Wal-Mart on a birthday banner, some plastic table clothes, some spiral decorations all in the Mickey Mouse theme. I bought plain red and navy plates, napkins and cups, streamers (rather then the Mickey ones).

Amazon has a cool Despicable Me decorating kit for only $4.18! That's a great deal!

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • We are going super simple here too.  I was planning an aquarium too but decided againt going to a big place with all of the crud going around.  We are doing pizza and cake with just family, having a Merry Go Round cake and might take a little trip to the local carousel for her to ride the horsies separately :)

  • We decided to go with a kids gym that does all the decorations and clean up and set up. However, our party is primarily for toddlers with a few immediate family that is also invited.

I agree with the suggestion of taking him on a special aquarium trip and just doing food and cake/presents with family.

  • DS turns two right before the Super Bowl, and FIL always has a party at his place. So, we are just bringing a cake and we'll sing happy birthday during halftime.

  • We just had family over to our place, and had food catered from Noodles and Company. Ordered a cake from the grocery store and find some fun Curious George decorations at the party store.

Don't beat yourself up! You have lots on your plate, and honestly, it was more fun for us to have friends and family come over and hang out. B peaced out after lunch and watched the Curious George movie on the couch with her god mother.

Happy early birthday to your little guy:)
Our little Samosa arrives in January!
  • I'd probably just go to the aquarium with the immediate family and invite everyone else over for cake later. We're doing a party but it's joint with DD's bestie on the compound where we live and there are a bunch of kids DD's age that she plays with every single day. If she didn't have so many friends so close by we would have just stuck with spending a day out with her and then having a friend or two over for dinner/cake.
  • I'd just keep it small too. You have a lot going on momma! We're staying small this year - just our parents and our siblings with their kids. I think maybe I'll take him to an inflatable jump place on his actual birthday since everyone is coming over on a weekend.
