What is Happening to My Body?!

I clean my house once a week, or try to anyways. As I was cleaning last night I gathered, what I can only describe as, a small dog from the floor of my bathroom and bedroom. Turns out it was just my hair but holy crap! I literally could have made a small animal out of what I got just from my floor! All of the other hair on my body is growing at a pace that would impress The Flash as are my nails. I thought I was supposed to have beautiful, luscious hair during pregnancy. Does anyone else have this problem?

  • It wouldn't surprise me! At the rate it's falling out I should already have bald spots!

My hair was falling out pretty badly in the first trimester but has slowed down considerably. Its alot thinner than it was pre pregnancy though.

When I asked my OB about this, he said while not entirely common, it happens to some women and theres not much you can do about it.

Im hoping I dont go bald postpartum.
  • My hair sucks lately... There is nothing luscious, thick or glowing about it. On another note, my skin isn't "glowing" either... Maybe glowing from all the breakouts. Nails same... All these things I have heard are positives of pregnancy are not happening to me! :-?

  • So I shed like a beast normally. If I swiffer my bathroom floor I could make a wig. Daily. I haven't noticed losing any more hair since being pregnant but holy cow THE BREAKAGE!!! I feel like I have a nice ring of frizz around the top of my head. It's really cute.
  • I have naturally thick curly hair. I've always shed so much hair on a weekly basis it's a little weird. I can't understand how I can lose so much hair and still not be able to wrap the damn elastic around my ponytail more than twice. I haven't noticed much difference in my hair, but my nails!
I am in LOVE with my nails these days! They've always been thin and they split, crack and peel. Now they're strong and I have to actually use nail trimmers about every 10 days to keep them from getting too long!

  • Same here. With my first I hardly lost any hair during pregnancy, then 12 after it started falling out. This time it started in the 2nd tri and is finally slowing down. I have breakage and baby hairs all over the place! I have to brush my hair over the sink or garbage otherwise it ends up EVERYWHERE!
  • I have very thick hair as well. It doesn't seem to be getting any thinner which is very surprising given how much hair I am losing. Before I get out of the shower I have to wash all of the loose hair off my body. I usually clean it up out of the floor after drying and straightening it. I didn't know I was pregnant until the second trimester but looking back now I think this started as soon as I got pregnant. I do have to say I'm loving the clear skin! I have PCOS and have always had horrible acne. That's one good thing about all these crazy symptoms so far!
  • @tif5596 I've noticed my skin on my face is smoother. The past 8 years or so I've had that under the skin acne that's just really bumpy and makes my skin feel rough. The past couple months it's cleared up and smoothed out.

The rest of my skin though? dry as the sahara! I have to use coconut oil AND lotion to keep it from being itchy, flaky and chapped.

  • @Prpljade‌ I'm with you on all of that. Although the skin on my face has cleared up everything is dry, even my face. My belly looks like I'm shedding a snake skin!

  • I hate my pregnancy hair. I hated it last time too. Frizz city. Breakage city. Nothing lovely about it.
  • I have always had really thin and fine hair.  Now my hair is only thinner and it looks like I'm going bald.  Maybe it's the hormones talking a bit but the weekend before I found out I was pregnant I was talking to my fiancée about it because I was very upset.  He was going to find a good dermatologist for me to see what the underlying cause was but that kind of got nixed once we found out just because we figured we both kind of wanted to keep the amount of drugs I would take during pregnancy to zero.  IT feels like my body is betraying me in every way,  I already feel bad enough about my growing body but then when I look in the mirror and see how ugly pregnancy has made me it just makes me want to crawl into a hole :(

  • @galnoir‌ closest thing I've seen to what you're describing was watching what to expect when you're expecting. I'm drawing a blank on the actress' name but she was crazy excited about getting pregnant and at some point was just like fuck this it sucks.

  • I thought I was going to lose it with the post partum hair loss after DS. I was telling my mom that I just couldn't deal with that again, to which my husband shouts from up stairs "she isn't kidding, she cried last time". Which is silly because I have very thick hair and it was thinner but I didn't have any bald spots. I'm pathetic.

@tif5596‌ I'm lucky that I have no hair/skin/nail problems during this pregnancy but I'm not sure if that's just because I'm lucky or because I've really taken good care of myself ever since I found out I was pregnant. I use mild shampoos and don't dye or use heat on my hair(I had a lot of problems with it before, it was super thin and weak) and as for my skin, it used to be very dry but now I use Eucerin 10%urea lotion all over and rub L'occitane almond spray oil on my belly and thighs twice a day and my skin is absolutely glowing. I think hydration is key when it comes to dry face and body. Try some very hydrating products, drink tons of water and go gentle on your hair, it might help!
  • Glad to hear I'm not alone - balding here I come!
  • I lose lots of hair as it is anyway, but mine has actually been oily and greasy , more than falling out.
  • My hair so far has been ok- definitely have more breakage than usual but my face has become a problem. For the past 2 months only the right cheek and chin have been a constant break out. I switched to a new gentle cleanser and its getting a bit better but I just look rashy on one side of my face. Not glowing!

  • I felt for her and that bra situation.. I feel like everybra is against me.
  • I told myself I would never have a mom haircut. Then I had a baby and realized that the reason moms cut their hair short is that thin hair looks worse when its long and coming out in clumps. Now I proudly sport a bob… This is one of the many many things they don't tell you.

Here's another gem: Did you love not having your period for 40 weeks? Well your body will gift you with 6-8 weeks of post partum bleeding after the baby comes. So it's like 40 weeks worth of period love that your body was saving up in the period bank.

@DMG122183‌ I just had someone ask me a few days ago if it was nice not having a period... I actually had a filter and was nice in my response but what I was really thinking was something along the lines of: between the gross discharge and pissing myself when I sneeze, cough, puke, or blink the wrong way I'm one step away from living the next months in depends. The contractions I will get to experience during labor will surpass any amount of period cramping. And, the post-partum bleeding will make up for these lost period months with the added bonus of not being able to use tampons!
  • I have baby hairs on my hair line growing out that have neve been longer than fuzz. They're long enough to tuck behind my ears, but short enough to not stay and stick out perpendicular to my head. :(

  • The not having a period thing. I've enjoyed it probably one of my fav things about pregnancy. I'm so not looking forward to having it again...
